Just over an hour and a half before Game 5 of the World Series, it was announced that George Springer was not in the lineup.
The Toronto Blue Jays’ designated hitter took a swing in Game 3 and immediately held the right side of his back. He was pulled from the game and was out of the lineup for the Blue Jays’ 6-2 victory in Game 4. While he doesn’t make the starting lineup, Springer will be an option off the bench, which includes pinch-hitting and pinch-running.
Another notable angle from this game is that it’ll be Trey Yesavage who gets the start for the Blue Jays. It’ll be his first career postseason start on the road, and the games keep getting bigger every time the 22-year-old makes a start. With the Blue Jays’ backs against the wall in Game 6 of the American League Championship Series, Yesavage pitched five and two-thirds innings with two runs given up in a 6-2 Blue Jays’ victory.
He’s already pitched against the Dodgers this World Series, doing so in Game 1, where he gave up two earned runs in four innings of work in an 11-4 Blue Jays’ victory. This postseason, Yesavage has a 4.26 ERA and 3.40 FIP in 19 innings of work, with a 34.2 K% and 12.7 BB%. The righty needs to have a great start to help the Blue Jays go up 3-2 in the series.
Opposite to Yesavage, Blake Snell will start for the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Jays found success against the left-handed pitcher in Game 1 of the World Series, pouncing on him for five earned runs through five innings of work. Hopefully, they can do the same in this game.
With Springer out of the lineup, who will lead off for the Blue Jays? Well, Davis Schneider draws into the lineup as he’ll play left field and lead off. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. bats second again, with Bo Bichette batting third. Alejandro Kirk cleans up, with Daulton Varsho being one of just three left-handed batters in the Blue Jays’ lineup. Ernie Clement bats sixth, Addison Barger bats seventh, Isiah Kiner-Falefa bats eighth, and Andrés Giménez bats ninth.
A win on Wednesday would mean that the Blue Jays return to Toronto up 3-2 in the series, with two opportunities to win the World Series on home soil. Let’s set up Wednesday evening’s game.
