There’s finally some news on the George Springer front.
Late in July 28th’s game against the Baltimore Orioles, the Toronto Blue Jays outfielder was hit in the head with a fastball and was removed from the game. A few days later, Springer was placed on the 7-day concussion Injured List and has yet to play since. Well, that is until Thursday.
It was reported by numerous sources that Springer has finally cleared concussion protocol and he’ll join the Buffalo Bisons on Thursday. Springer will appear in Thursday’s game, which also happens to be the game Trey Yesavage will make his Triple-A debut.
Since that game, the Blue Jays are 7-6 and maintain their American League East lead. However, three of those games were against the lowly Colorado Rockies, with the Jays posting a 4-6 record against competent teams in Springer’s absence.
The Jays set records in that series against the Rockies, but they’ve been missing that thump that Springer’s bat provides. This season, Springer has dipped into the fountain of youth and is slashing .291/.383/.506 with 18 home runs in 408 plate appearances for a 148 wRC+ and 2.5 fWAR, on pace for his best season as a Blue Jay.
He’s mainly been used as a designated hitter this season, which could cause issues when/if Anthony Santander returns in 2025. The latest update on Santander is that he could swing a bat next week, meaning he’s still a long way away.
Springer is arguably the front-runner for the American League designated hitter Silver Slugger, as he has the best wRC+ for AL DHs with 200 or more plate appearances in the DH role. He’s also been a staple at the top of the Blue Jays’ order, finding a new home in the second spot following Bo Bichette when everyone is healthy.
Getting Springer’s bat back in the lineup will be a huge boost down the stretch run, and it’d be even better if Santander returns. It may take him a bit to get back up to speed, but the Jays’ lineup will be that much better when he returns, not to mention Shane Bieber’s impending return.
