Trey Yesavage’s rapid ascent up the Toronto Blue Jays system has continued.
On Monday afternoon, MLB.com’s Keegan Matheson reported that the Blue Jays have promoted their 2024 first-round pick to the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons, his final stop in the minor leagues.
It’s hard to argue against their decision. In his last outing with the Double-A New Hampshire Fisher Cats on Friday saw the 22-year-old threw five innings from the bullpen, allowing two earned runs but striking out seven. It was the third consecutive game where Yesavage didn’t allow a free pass, which was a concern for a while.
As a whole this season, Yesavage has a 3.01 ERA and 2.50 FIP in 80.2 innings pitched, with a 42.3 K% and 9.5 BB%. In his Double-A career, Yesavage had a 4.50 ERA and 2.56 FIP in 30 innings pitched, with a 38 K% and 9.1 BB%.
In his 80.2 innings pitched, Yesavage has struck out 134 batters, good enough to be tied for third in the minor leagues. Also in the top 10 are Juaron Watts-Brown and Gage Stanifer, the former being traded for Seranthony Domínguez before the trade deadline.
Although Yesavage is the most notable promotion, there was movement across the Blue Jays’ minor league system. According to The Athletic’s Mitch Bannon, Fernando Perez was promoted to Double-A, while Austin Cates and Silvano Hechavarria were promoted to High-A.
Perez, 21, signed as an international free agent in 2022. After a tough start to his season, the right-handed pitcher has a 1.51 ERA and 2.12 FIP in his past 47.2 innings pitched, dating back to June 14th. This season, he has a 3.05 ERA and 3.16 FIP in 94.1 innings pitched.
Hechavarria signed as an international free agent last June and has dominated the lower minors this season. Between the Florida Complex League and Single-A, the 22-year-old has a 1.96 ERA and 3.57 FIP in 64.1 innings pitched, with a 24.8 K% and 5.9 BB%.
Cates was selected in the seventh round of the 2024 draft from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and authored a 3.51 ERA and 4.07 FIP in 82 innings pitched, with a 23.2 K% and an 8.3 BB%.
We’ll see how these four pitching prospects do at their new level.
