George Springer hasn’t missed a beat despite missing the past three weeks.
On Friday evening, the Toronto Blue Jays’ designated hitter played his second game on a rehab assignment with the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons, going 1-3 and hitting a home run. In his game on Thursday, Springer hit a double and went 1-2 with a walk.
There wasn’t anything particularly special about the home run, as he hit a sinker on a 1-0 pitch to the opposite field. It went an estimated distance of 352 feet with an exit velocity of 99.2 mph.
This was Springer’s first home run at Sahlen Field since July 21, 2021. That blast came in a game against the Boston Red Sox, as the Blue Jays played a portion of their home games at Sahlen Field that season. Just a week later, the Blue Jays returned to Rogers Centre for the first time in nearly two years.
It seems like the next stop for Springer is joining the Blue Jays at Rogers Centre. His last game came on July 28 against the Baltimore Orioles, as he was hit in the head with a fastball late in the game. Since then, he’s spent a handful of weeks on the 7-day Injured List with a concussion.
His bat will be a welcome return. Since the game in which he was injured, the Blue Jays have scored 92 runs, which sounds like a lot, but 45 of those runs were scored in a three-game series against the dreadful Colorado Rockies. In games against non-Rockie teams, the Jays have just 47 runs with a 6-7 record, averaging only 3.6 runs a game.
Springer resurgence is a big reason why the Blue Jays lead the division, but it’s not a hot take to say he’s been their best batter this season. In 408 plate appearances, Springer is slashing .291/.383/.506 with 18 home runs for a 148 wRC+. He’s just one home run shy of matching his season total from a season ago, when he finished with a 95 wRC+.
Adding Springer, who has filled the two-hole and designated hitter role to perfection, is only going to make this special team even better. Add in the fact that Shane Bieber threw seven scoreless innings in the same Bisons’ game, and Anthony Santander has resumed swinging a bat, and it’s safe to say that this team could do some real damage in the postseason.
