Three years ago, the Toronto Blue Jays changed their manager.
On July 13, 2022, the Blue Jays fired Charlie Montoyo, replacing him with John Schneider, their current manager.
The Jays hired Montoyo in late October 2018 for the 2019 season. The 2019 season wasn’t a good one for the Blue Jays, as they finished with a 67-95 record, second-worst in the American League East. In the pandemic-affected 2020 season, the Jays were 32-28, making their first postseason trip since 2016.
Although the Jays missed the postseason in 2021, Montoyo led them to a 91-71 record, their best record since the 2015 season. After a 46-42 start, the Blue Jays fired Montoyo, as the team was 2-8 in their last 10 games leading up to the date.
Schneider has been in the Jays’ organization since he was drafted in the 13th round of the 2002 draft. Retiring after the 2007 season, he became the hitting coach with the Gulf Coast League Jays in 2008 and became their manager in 2009.
Over the next decade, Schneider managed various levels of the Jays’ minor league system, including in 2017 with the Low-A Dunedin Blue Jays and in 2018 with the Double-A New Hampshire Fisher Cats, both teams featured Vladimir Guerrero Jr and Bo Bichette.
Schneider joined Montoyo’s big league bench in 2019 and took over for him on an interim basis on July 13, 2022. After taking over, Schneider led the Jays to a 46-28 record to end the season, giving them a 92-70 record and their first postseason appearance in a normal season since 2016.
Hired as their permanent manager for the 2023 season, Schneider led the Jays to an 89-73 record and another postseason appearance. Unfortunately, they couldn’t find the same success in 2024, as the Jays finished with a 74-88 record, last in the AL East for the first time since 2013.
Since taking over the Blue Jays, Schneider has a 264-230 record in 494 games. On Sunday, he was ejected for the 10th time, moving into fifth among all Blue Jays managers. In 2023, he finished sixth in manager of the year voting for the American League.
