Infielder Lenyn Sosa is officially beginning a rehab assignment, the Toronto Blue Jays announced via their transaction log on Monday.
Sosa, sidelined since May 26 with a right wrist contusion, was assigned to the Florida Complex League in his return to game action and is serving as the designated hitter in his first rehab contest.
While the Blue Jays were in Boston last week, manager John Schneider told reporters that Sosa was nearing the start of a rehab assignment, despite being considered “behind Addison Barger” in his recovery timeline. The latter of those two remains without a rehab assignment date.
After suffering a setback a few weeks ago, Sosa was shut down from baseball activities by the club just as he was starting to swing a bat again. But he had since been participating in hitting and defensive drills at the player development complex in Dunedin, Fla., in the last week or so.
Toronto acquired Sosa from the Chicago White Sox back in April, sending teenage outfield prospect Jordan Rich and future considerations in return to complete the trade. There was hope that the 26-year-old — who blasted a career-high 22 home runs last season — could supply lightning in the bottle for this inconsistent offence.
But instead, Sosa’s prior offensive woes as a White Sox followed him north of the border as a Blue Jay, posting a .188/.205/.275 slash line with five extra-base hits (one home run), 18 strikeouts and only one walk in 28 games prior to landing on the 10-day injured list. That earned him a miserable 28 wRC+ (100 league average), seven points lower than the figure he earned in 12 games with Chicago earlier this season.
Overall, the bat-first second baseman has accounted for almost minus-one fWAR across 40 games split between the White Sox and Blue Jays thus far. In comparison, he ended up being worth a career-best 1.3 fWAR over 140 games in 2025, serving as a league-average hitter per wRC+.
It’s unclear how many rehab at-bats Sosa — who’s out of minor-league options — will require before he’s cleared to rejoin Toronto’s roster. That update will likely arrive during Schneider’s pre-game availability with reporters Monday afternoon.
