John Schneider says Trey Yesavage has an injury to the meniscus in his left knee and will visit a specialist Monday to determine next steps. Surgery "is always a possibility," when a player sees a specialist, said Schneider. "We're obviously hoping to avoid that."

There’s more bad news on the injury front for the Toronto Blue Jays.
Prior to Thursday’s make-up contest against the Chicago Cubs, manager John Schneider revealed that Trey Yesavage will visit a specialist on Monday after an MRI on his left knee showed a meniscus injury. It isn’t known if he’ll require surgery to repair the ailment or can attempt to rehab it.
Obviously, if it’s determined that Yesavage suffered a tear in his meniscus, it’d mark the end of his 2026 season.
The Blue Jays placed Yesavage on the 15-day IL with left knee inflammation ahead of Wednesday’s series finale versus the Houston Astros, creating space for one of the two arms (Chase Lee and Lazaro Estrada) recalled from Triple-A Buffalo ahead of first pitch.
The 23-year-old rookie injured his left knee during his warm-ups before the third inning of Tuesday’s 7-2 loss to the Astros. He departed the game with one of the club’s trainers and was sent for an MRI the following day.
Losing Yesavage to injury came only a few hours after Schneider announced the team’s plans to utilize a six-man rotation amid a 17-game stretch before their next off-day on Aug. 17. But that’s now been temporarily shelved, though it could return if Spencer Arrighetti — making a Triple-A rehab start on Thursday — is activated for his Blue Jays debut next week.
It’s also worth noting that Toronto’s front office claimed veteran right-hander Matt Waldron off waivers from the San Diego Padres on Wednesday — adding another layer of injury protection for this rotation.
If Yesavage were to undergo season-ending surgery, he’d join the likes of José Berríos (Tommy John), Bowden Francis (Tommy John) and Cody Ponce (torn ACL) as injured pitchers already ruled out for the remainder of 2026.
In his first full major league season, Yesavage has made 18 starts thus far, pitching to a 3.65 ERA and 4.08 FIP with an 11.7 per cent strikeout-minus-walk rate, worth 1.3 fWAR across 93.2 innings. He began this season on the IL with a right shoulder impingement, the ramifications of last season’s run to the World Series in his first professional campaign, followed by the shortest off-season of his career.
