Unlike the 2024 season, the Toronto Blue Jays bought at the deadline.
While they acquired Shane Bieber, Seranthony Domínguez, Louis Varland, and Ty France, the Jays also gave up a handful of prospects, notably of the pitching variety. Two of those prospects, Khal Stephen and Kendry Rojas, have a legitimate argument to be on the backend of a top 100 list for all prospects in baseball.
In this article, we’ll take a look at how Rojas has performed since joining the Minnesota Twins, as he (and Alan Roden) were traded to the American League Central team for France and Varland.
Before the trade
The left-handed pitcher signed with the Blue Jays during the 2020 International Free Agency for a bonus worth $215,000. He had put up good enough results to be on my radar for the first three seasons in the organization, but Rojas hit another level in 2024.
Spending the majority of the season with the High-A Vancouver Canadians, Rojas had a 2.43 ERA and 3.02 FIP in 55.2 innings pitched, with a 27 K% and 5.3 BB%. Over his final seven starts, six were quality starts, with five of the 10 earned runs coming in his penultimate game of the season.
Rojas missed the start of the 2025 season due to injury, but he quickly became must-watch television. After a rehab stint with the Florida Complex League Blue Jays and the Single-A Dunedin Blue Jays, Rojas made a proper season debut with the Double-A New Hampshire Fisher Cats, where he had a 3.86 ERA and 1.79 FIP in 18.2 innings pitched, with a 40 K% and 2.7 BB%.
Before the trade, Rojas earned a promotion to the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons, where he pitched five innings in his only start, ending up with a 10.80 ERA and 7.51 FIP. Despite that, Rojas was set to rank as our fourth-best prospect in the Blue Jays’ system in the mid-season update, but he was traded shortly before the deadline came.
Since the trade
On July 31st, the Blue Jays sent Rojas and Alan Roden to the Minnesota Twins in exchange for Ty France and Louis Varland, a step price for a controlled arm and one of the best defensive first basemen in the league. Unfortunately, Roden’s season has come to an end, but Rojas has found success with their Triple-A team.
In four starts, the Cuban left-handed pitcher has an 8.18 ERA in 17 innings pitched, with a 21.5 K% and 13.6 BB%. He gave up five unearned runs in his first start (an error led to a disastrous inning), gave up three earned runs in his second start, and four earned runs in his third start.
However, Rojas’ start on August 27th was his best, as he went four scoreless innings while giving up just one walk and striking out five. Since joining the Twins, the one walk is the fewest he’s had, while his five strikeouts match.
He didn’t find the same success in Tuesday’s start against Louisville, as the Cuban lefty gave up seven earned runs while getting just one out.
The should get another chance against Louisville, as his next turn is on Sunday.
