Edward Duran is one of the Toronto Blue Jays best catching prospects.
This is Blue Jays Nation’s bi-annual prospect ranking, where we’ll look at the top 35 prospects in the system in the month of February. As always, I’ll look at the player’s stats, what other publications have to say, as well as my own observations of the players. If you missed the 26th-ranked prospect, you can read about Cutter Coffey here.
Getting to know Edward Duran…
Position: Catcher
Bats: Right
Born: May 29th, 2004
Acquired: Trade with Miami Marlins
Previous ranking: 24th
During the 2021 International Free Agency period, the Miami Marlins signed the catcher to a bonus of $450,000. He received only 60 plate appearances that season with the Marlins’ Dominican Summer League team, where he failed to hit a home run, but slashed .340/.450/.440 for a 159 wRC+.
Duran repeated the level in 2022, slashing .224/.325/.406 with no home runs in 169 plate appearances. Before the trade deadline, the Blue Jays traded Jordan Groshans to the Marlins in exchange for Zach Pop, Anthony Bass, and a player to be named later that turned out to be Duran.
In his first season with the new organization, Duran slashed .315/.422/.417 with two home runs in 154 plate appearances, splitting his time between the Florida Complex League and Single-A. The entirety of the 2024 season was spent with the Single-A Dunedin Blue Jays, where he slashed .245/.346/.313 with no home runs in 327 plate appearances for a 97 wRC+.
Duran’s offensive game took a step forward in 2025, as he slashed .296/.378/.439 with five home runs in 291 plate appearances with the D-Jays. He earned a promotion to the High-A Vancouver Canadians, where he slashed .230/.329/.336 with three home runs in 140 plate appearances, giving him a 118 wRC+ between the two levels. The highlight of his season was a 22-game hitting streak in May.
In their mid-season update, MLB Pipeline ranked Duran as their 13th-best Blue Jays prospect. They note that his offence has improved, but grade his hit tool a 45 and his power tool at 40. Duran has always been a glove first catcher, with his scouting report noting he’s a better receiver and has a strong arm.
With a good eye at the plate and improved offence (including power), there’s still room to become a better offensive catcher, but with strong defence, Duran has positioned himself nicely to be a potential backup catcher in the future. The start of the 2026 season in Vancouver will be a big determining factor of how high his ceiling actually is.
