Toronto Blue Jays pitching prospect Nolan Perry continues to dominate the lower minors.
Starting the High-A Vancouver Canadians’ game on Tuesday evening, the 22-year-old right-handed pitcher reached the six inning mark for the first time in his career, striking out eight, walking one, and allowing four hits.
Over his four starts at the High-A level, Perry has given up just one earned run (a solo home run) over 21 innings pitched. More impressively, the Blue Jays’ 12th-round selection in 2022 now has struck out 47.4% of the batter he’s faced, while posting a respectable BB% of 7.9%.
Including his Single-A statistics, Perry now has a 1.07 ERA and 2.09 FIP in 42 innings pitched, with an incredible 44.2 K% and 7.8 BB%. No pitcher with 40 or more innings pitched in the minor leagues this season has a K% higher than Perry’s, in fact, no other pitcher has a K% above 40% in 40 or more innings pitched.
Of any pitcher to have thrown a pitch in the minor leagues this season, Perry’s 68 strikeouts sit at the top, having a five-strikeout cushion. Saying that Perry has been unreal this season would be an understatement.
If the Canadians’ rotation stays on track, he’ll make another start on Sunday. And if he performs well in that game, he’ll surely win his second consecutive Northwest League Pitcher of the Week.
Other notes…
Perry’s strong start was enough for the Canadians to pick up a 3-0 victory. Pitching the remaining three innings was Jonathan Todd, who struck out three and was perfect. Carter Cunningham became the third Blue Jays prospect this season to reach double-digit home runs, hitting a solo shot in the sixth inning.
The only other “A” affiliate to win on Tuesday were the Buffalo Bisons, who walked off the Lehigh Valley IronPigs in a 5-4 win. Catcher Willie MacIver had a strong game, going 3-5 with three singles. Josh Kasevich had a two-hit game, hitting the team’s lone extra-base hit, a triple.
Pat Gallagher started the game for the Bisons in what was a bullpen game. He struck out three in three innings of one-hit ball. Conor Larkin picked up the hold, giving up an earned run in two innings of work.
Unsurprisingly, the Florida Complex League Blue Jays also won, defeating the FCL Yankees 7-6. Catching prospect Franklin Rojas hit his first home run of the season, giving him a slash line of .321/.406/.446 with five extra-base hits for a 124 wRC+.
Brock Tibbitts also hit a home run, his third of the season, while Jean Joseph hit his first double of the season. Tibbitts and Rojas each had two-hit games, as did second baseman Angel Guzman.
On the mound, Carson Messina pitched three and two-third scoreless innings with two walks and three strikeouts. Drafted in the 12th round of the 2024 draft, Messina now has a 2.25 ERA this season, as the FCL Jays move to a league-best 15-3.
The Double-A New Hampshire Fisher Cats may have lost their opener 8-7, but Victor Arias had a great game, going 3-3 with a walk and his third double of the season. Jay Harry hit his ninth double of the season, and Jorge Burgos hit a home run and went 2-2 with a walk.
Like the Fisher Cats, the Single-A Dunedin Blue Jays blew a late lead, dropping the opener to the Clearwater Threshers by a score of 10-8. Aldo Gaxiola hit his sixth home run of the season, while Yorman Licourt his seventh home run, as well as his sixth and seventh double of the season. Juan Sanchez hit his first Single-A triple. Eric Snow hit two singles.
