Two prospects in the Toronto Blue Jays system have been honoured with “Player of the Week” honours.
On Monday, Nolan Perry was named the Northwest League’s Pitcher of the Week, while Alexis Hernandez was named as the league’s Player of the Week.
At this point, you know who Perry is and what he’s done this season. Since joining the Canadians, he’s pitched 15 innings over three starts, giving up just one earned run for a 0.60 ERA and 1.86 FIP. He’s also struck out more than half the batters he’s faced at the level (50.9%), while posting a 9.1 BB%.
As for the week itself, Perry only made one start, going five innings on May 20th, allowing one hit, a walk, and striking out 10. When including his Single-A starts, the 22-year-old right-handed pitcher has a 1.25 ERA and 2.20 FIP over 36 innings pitched. His 60 strikes sit fifth in the minor leagues, while his K% of 45.1% sits fourth.
New No. 17 #BlueJays prospect Nolan Perry continues his fantastic start to the season: 5 IP 1 H 0 R 10 K 1 BB 15 Whiffs (45% whiff rate) 83 Pitches Batters are hitting .124/.209/.248 with a 45% K rate vs. Perry this year. #BlueJays50 @vancanadians @MLBPipeline @nolanperry101
Hernandez, on the other hand, is not a well known prospect in the Blue Jays system. Selected in the minor league portion of the 2023 Rule 5 draft, he had a solid first season in the system, before slashing .260/.354/.415 with eight home runs in 323 plate appearances last season.
So far this season, the outfielder is slashing .292/.375/.511 with six home runs in 162 plate appearances for a 137 wRC+, with a 10.5 BB% and 21 K%. In May, the 23-year-old is slashing .329/.408/.671 with all six of his home runs and seven doubles in 87 plate appearances, good for a 180 wRC+.
This past week, Hernandez slashed .480/.517/1.040 with three home runs and five doubles in 30 plate appearances, giving him a 291 wRC+. This was well deserved accolade, and he’s starting to look like a prospect worth monitoring. Whenever he’s promoted to Double-A, it’ll be a big test for the 23-year-old.
It’s the second time this season that the Blue Jays’ have had a clean sweep of the NWL Player of the Week awards. Back in mid-April, Tucker Toman was named as the Player of the Week, while right-handed pitcher Daniel Guerra was named the Pitcher of the Week for the league.
Not only that, but Sean Keys was named as the Eastern League’s Player of the Week in the week of April 13-19th. This wasn’t Perry’s first Pitcher of the Week award this season, earning the Florida State League’s award in the same week.
Carter Cunningham won the first awarded Player of the Week award thanks to a terrific week from April 6-12th. The other Player of the Week winner went to Buffalo Bisons outfielder RJ Schreck, who won the International League’s Player of the Week award for the first full series in May.
