Three things are certain in life: death, taxes, a strong start in Nolan Perry’s latest outing.
On Tuesday afternoon, the Toronto Blue Jays’ right-handed pitching prospect was promoted to the Double-A New Hampshire Fisher Cats. Just a few hours later, the 12th round pick in 2022 made his upper-minor debut in a game against the Reading Fightin Phils.
In the bottom of the first, Perry generated a ground out, followed by back-to-back walks. However, he got out of the inning thanks to two consecutive strikeouts. The following inning saw him strike out two, with a double sandwiched in between the two punchouts. Perry’s final inning saw him strike out the side.
Over three innings of work, Perry surrendered just one hit and two walks, all while striking out seven. The 22-year-old threw 59 pitches, with 36 of them being strikes. Moreover, Perry generated 14 whiffs on 28 total swings, good for a 50 whiff %.
Double-A is the third level Perry has pitched at this season. He appeared in five games with the Single-A Dunedin Blue Jays, then made seven starts with the High-A Vancouver Canadians before his call-up on Tuesday. Over 54.2 innings, Perry has a 2.47 ERA and 2.71 FIP, with a 39.4 K% and 8.88 BB%.

Other notes…

Perry departed the game with the Fisher Cats up 1-0, but they ultimately lost 9-6. Aaron Parker hit his eighth home run of the season and Cade Doughty hit his first Double-A homer of the season. Hedbert Perez, Victor Arias, and Nick Goodwin each hit a double.
Another top pitching prospect in the system made a start on Tuesday. Unfortunately, things didn’t go as well for Johnny King with the Canadians, as he surrendered four earned runs over four and one-third innings of work. King issued five walks and struck out just three.
The C’s ultimately won that game 6-5, overcoming a 5-0 deficit. Manuel Beltre hit his 12th double of the season, while J.R. Freethy hit his 13th double. Down 5-4 and down to their final out, Peyton Williams hit a walk-off single with the bases loaded.
Jake Bloss had a tough outing for the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons, giving up 11 earned runs over four innings of work, including four home runs. Josh Kasevich hit his second home run in as many games, Willie MacIver had a three-hit performance, and Jay Harry hit two singles for another multi-hit game.
The other “A” affiliate, the D-Jays, defeated the Jupiter Hammerheads 7-1. JoJo Parker hit his 18th double of the season as he continues to rake. Jean Joseph and Jake Cook also hit doubles.
In the rookie leagues, the Florida Complex League Blue Jays fell 11-9, but Pascual Archila is quickly becoming a prospect worth monitoring, hitting his sixth home run of the season. Angel Guzman hit his eighth double, and the rehabbing Enmanuel Bonilla hit a double as well. On the mound, Sann Omosako struck out four in one and two-thirds innings.
Both Dominican Summer League teams lost on Tuesday. The DSL Blue Jays Red fell 2-1 to DSL Colorado, as Elaineiker Coronado hit two doubles in a three-hit game. Franiel Severino had a good start, striking out two over four innings of one-hit ball.
The DSL Blue Jays Blue fell 7-1 to the DSL White Sox, as Luis Felipe hit his third double of the season. Catcher Juan Caricote was the only Blue Jay prospect with a mutli-hit game, notching two singles.
