The Toronto Blue Jays will be without their most significant source of power as they open a series against the Boston Red Sox on Monday.
Kazuma Okamoto was a late scratch from the Blue Jays’ lineup with a left knee contusion, the team announced on Monday.
It is currently unclear when Okamoto sustained the injury. Though he leads the team with 24 home runs, the 30-year-old third baseman has struggled in August with only six singles and two walks over 39 plate appearances, good for a .162 slugging percentage and .205 on-base percentage. The last time Okamoto hit a home run was July 28 against the Washington Nationals.
The six-time NPB All-Star also leads Toronto with 71 RBIs, but due to his boom-or-bust profile at the plate, he grades out as only a slightly above-league-average hitter with a 104 wRC+. Blue Jays manager John Schneider told reporters before the game that Okamoto will be considered day-to-day.
Recently recalled infielder Charles McAdoo will take Okamoto’s place at third base and bat seventh in the Blue Jays’ order. McAdoo homered in four straight games for the triple-A Buffalo Bisons this past week, while slashing .464/.483/.893 over six games to earn International League Player of the Week.
The 24-year-old hit a home run in his major-league debut with the Blue Jays earlier this season, but struggled afterward with four hits, zero walks and a .160/.160/.280 slash line in 25 plate appearances. The Blue Jays’ No. 12 prospect, McAdoo has been red-hot since being optioned back down to Buffalo on June 19, with eight homers, 30 RBIs and an .880 OPS over 39 games.
McAdoo will have big shoes to fill power-wise as the Blue Jays aim to continue building on the winning road trip that now has them 3.5 games back of the final American League wild-card spot.
