Before opening Monday night’s series with the Boston Red Sox, the Toronto Blue Jays were forced to shuffle their roster. After three bullpen-taxing games in Philadelphia, coupled with the fact the Blue Jays’ next off day doesn’t come until Monday, August 17, a move was almost a necessity.
The Blue Jays announced that both Simeon Woods Richardson and Charles McAdoo were added to the 26-man roster and will be active for tonight’s contest.
Woods Richardson joins the Blue Jays for his second stint with the club after originally being acquired from the Minnesota Twins on June 3. In three games with the Blue Jays this season, the right-hander is 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA and a 1.10 WHIP. The 25-year-old impressed during his brief stint with the club, striking out five batters across his 10 innings pitched and holding opponents to a .129 average. The one area of concern for Woods Richardson was the walks, as he issued seven free passes over that span.
For the season with both the Twins and Blue Jays, Woods Richardson has pitched in 15 games (10 starts) and is 1-7 with a 6.40 ERA and a 1.75 WHIP. In 57.2 innings pitched, Woods Richardson has struck out 31, walked 32, and allowed opponents to hit .303.
McAdoo, like Woods Richardson, also returns for his second stint with the club. The Blue Jays’ No. 12-ranked prospect per MLB Pipeline blasted his first career home run in his MLB debut on May 29 in Baltimore, and across eight games with the club batted .160 with one home run and three RBIs. With three left-handers including–Patrick Sandoval, Ranger Suarez, and Payton Tolle–awaiting the Blue Jays this week, the opportunity for McAdoo could be here to showcase the power he’s possessed this season in Triple-A. In 88 games with the Buffalo Bisons, McAdoo has hit .269 with 16 home runs and 57 RBIs.
McAdoo was named International League’s Player of the Week earlier today after appearing in six games and batting .464 with four home runs. The 24-year-old reached base at a .483 clip and homered in four straight games. To make room for Woods Richardson and McAdoo, both Lazaro Estrada and Davis Schneider were optioned to Triple-A.
Estrada heads back to Buffalo after being used in all three games and throwing 50 pitches during the series against the Phillies. The right-hander picked up his first career win Friday, first career save on Saturday, and his first career loss on Sunday. Through seven games with the Blue Jays this season, Estrada is 1-1 with a 4.50 ERA and a 1.25 WHIP. Across 12 innings, the 27-year-old has struck out eight, walked eight, and held opponents to a .167 average.
Schneider returns to Buffalo after receiving only 15 at-bats since being recalled on July 23. During that span, Schneider went 1-for-15 with seven walks and is now batting .142 with three home runs and 12 RBIs across 61 games this season.
To make room for Woods Richardson on the 40-man roster after he was designated for assignment on June 26, catcher Willie MacIver was DFA’d. Acquired from the Texas Rangers in April, MacIver appeared in 60 games with the Bisons this season and batted .270 with seven home runs and 44 RBIs.
