The Toronto Blue Jays made a roster move ahead of Saturday’s game.
A few hours before the Blue Jays play the second of three against the Kansas City Royals in Missouri, it was reported that Mason Fluharty has been recalled, as Chris Bassitt has been placed on the 15-day Injured List, retroactive to Friday.
After Max Scherzer went just two-thirds of an inning in Friday’s game, the Blue Jays’ bullpen desperately needed a fresh arm. Enter Fluharty. For the season, the left-handed pitcher has a 4.94 ERA and 4.35 FIP in 47.1 innings pitched.
The 24-year-old had a strong start to the season before he began to falter towards the end of his first tenure. Upon being recalled on July 22nd, Fluharty authored a 3.38 ERA and 5.40 FIP in 13.1 innings pitched, but had an 18.9 K% and 15.1 BB%.
More worryingly is the loss of Chris Bassitt for the remainder of the regular season. Starting pitching is already a concern heading into the postseason, and Bassitt had been one of the Blue Jays’ more productive starters over the past month or so. Since the start of August, Bassitt has had a 3.23 ERA and 3.93 FIP in 47.1 innings pitched, reaching the five-inning mark all but twice, including his most recent outing on Thursday. Bassitt will be eligible to return before the start of the American League Divisional Series.
Paired with the news that José Berríos will pitch out of the bullpen for the foreseeable future, Trey Yesavage has earned a spot in the rotation for the remainder of the season. As of now, the Blue Jays will use a four-man rotation, featuring Scherzer, Yesavage, Shane Bieber, and Kevin Gausman, as they have an off-day on Monday.
If more length is needed toward the end of the season, the Jays could bring Berríos or Lauer back into the rotation, or turn to Alek Manoah, Easton Lucas, or Adam Macko. For now, that is a problem for a later date as they look to clinch a postseason berth with a win on Saturday.
