The New Hampshire Fisher Cats are set to receive a new power threat in their lineup.
Per his agency, Toronto Blue Jays prospect Carter Cunningham is being promoted from High-A Vancouver to Double-A with the Fisher Cats after putting together a strong first 50 games with the Canadians.
Over those 50 games, Cunningham batted .250 with 10 home runs and 36 RBIs, leading all Canadians in both home runs and RBIs. The outfielder has also shown a keen eye at the plate, highlighted by 35 walks, which has helped him reach base at a .386 clip.
The success this season follows up on a strong 2025 season in which Cunningham appeared in 102 games with the Canadians at the High-A level. The now 25-year-old slashed .220 with 16 home runs and 59 RBIs, while turning in a .346 on-base percentage in large part to his 67 walks drawn.
While Cunningham’s raw tools at the plate can’t be denied, his first three seasons at the professional level within the Blue Jays’ organization after being selected in the 10th round of the 2024 MLB Draft have had a lot of swing and miss.
In 25 games with the Dunedin Blue Jays during the 2024 season, Cunningham struck out 23 times in 76 at-bats. The 2025 season saw much of the same, with Cunningham fanning 136 times in his 345 at-bats, and the left-handed bat has recorded 70 strikeouts over his 180 at-bats this season.
After getting off to a blazing start to begin the season, Cunningham was named Northwest League Player of the Month for the month of April. Cunningham blasted six home runs and drove in 23 runs during the season’s opening month, and while speaking to Blue Jays Nation, touched on what it meant to him to receive the award.
“It’s great to earn those honours,” said Cunningham. “It means a ton to me and just shows how much work went into the offseason to get to that level early in the year. There were a lot of things that I experimented with in the second half of last season, and I just kept on working on those aspects into the offseason. The goal is to keep up that consistency, because having a hot start is great, but I need to keep that up in June, in September, and throughout the whole season. Just keeping that ‘it’s a marathon, not a sprint’ mindset.”
Cunningham’s next challenge will be against tougher pitching in the Eastern League at the Double-A level. While Cunningham’s game hasn’t revolved around being a high-contact guy to this point, he knows his strengths and is up there to make sure that every at-bat makes an impact on the game.
“Just knowing who I am as a player and knowing what this organization wants from me is playing a big part in my mindset at the plate,” explained Cunningham. “They (Jays) expect me to do damage, and every time I am up there, I have the mentality that I am in scoring position, and that I need to get my best swing off every time based on the situation in front of me. Understanding what’s in front of me and just doing what I can to help the team win.”
Cunningham’s first opportunity in a Fisher Cats’ uniform could come this weekend when they continue their series at home with the Altoona Curve.
