On Monday, Jake Bloss made his second rehab appearance of the 2026 season with the Florida Complex League Blue Jays.
Bloss squared off with the Florida Coast League Yankees and put together a very strong outing. The 24-year-old posted a pitching line of 2 1/3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 K, turning in his second straight appearance without allowing a run.
Bloss required only 15 pitches to get through his outing, getting four of the seven outs he recorded on one pitch. In his first rehab appearance, Bloss tossed 35 pitches, so the right-hander remains a fair bit away from working his way back into contention to join the Blue Jays.
While results on rehab outings are often secondary to how the pitcher is feeling, seeing Bloss open with 4 2/3 shutout frames and striking out seven batters provides excitement about what Bloss could bring to the MLB club.
Bloss opened the 2025 season in Triple-A with the Buffalo Bisons after being acquired from the Houston Astros at the 2024 MLB trade deadline along with Joey Loperfido and Will Wagner in exchange for Yusei Kikuchi. In six starts with the Bisons last season, Bloss went 0-5 with a 6.46 ERA and 1.94 WHIP. Bloss left his start on May 3, 2025, and shortly after, an announcement was made that he underwent Tommy John surgery.
One of the concerning signs before heading to the IL last season was the amount of hard contact Bloss was allowing. Over 23 2/3 innings, Bloss gave up 33 hits, allowing opposing teams to hit .330 against him, so seeing him miss bats early on, even at a lower level, is a welcoming sign.
The former Astros’ third-round draft pick in 2023 made a brief stint in the big leagues before being acquired by the Blue Jays. In three starts with the Astros during the 2024 season, Bloss went 0-1 with a 6.94 ERA and 1.63 WHIP, pitching out of necessity as the Astros’ pitching staff dealt with injuries. Even though the numbers weren’t great, Bloss was able to strike out 11 batters over his 11 2/3, showcasing that he has the stuff to miss bats at the game’s highest level.
As the Toronto Blue Jays deal with injuries to José Berríos, Shane Bieber, and Max Scherzer, and are currently working without a fifth starter, Bloss has the chance to throw his name into the conversation down the road if he can keep up his success across higher minor league levels.
