Jake Casey’s tools have made him an intriguing prospect with the Toronto Blue Jays organization.
The Blue Jays selected Casey – the son of former big-leaguer Sean Casey – in the 15th round, 442nd overall, during the 2025 MLB Draft out of Kent State University. Casey signed with the Blue Jays on July 18, 2025, and was assigned to Single-A Dunedin.
In 23 games with Dunedin to close out the 2025 season, Casey batted .281 with three home runs and 14 RBIs. Casey reached base at a .439 clip and put his speed on display, highlighted by four steals in five attempts.
To open the 2026 campaign, Casey was assigned to High-A to play for the Vancouver Canadians. Casey appeared in 57 games with the Canadians and batted .244 with 12 home runs and 52 RBIs. The 23-year-old turned in an OBP of .373 and was able to continue with the display of speed he showed in 2025, this time recording 10 steals in 12 attempts.
Upon completion of the 2026 campaign, in which he helped the Canadians pick up a Northwest League title, Casey decided to continue his season by taking part in the Arizona Fall League.
Through five games, Casey is batting .125 with one home run and two RBIs. After going hitless over his first three games with the Mesa Solar Sox, Casey has picked up two hits over his past two games.
While speaking to MLB.com last week, Casey touched on what he’s hoping to achieve while playing in the AFL and how he can continue to use his speed to his ability.
“Obviously, you don’t want to go off results here. I think it’s more just how I can learn and get better everyday,” Casey said. “I feel like I’ve already learned a lot. Learning how to steal bases and use my speed. I’m just staying with the process.”
Casey has certainly put his speed on display through his five games, as the outfielder is tied for first among all players in the AFL with five stolen bases. The Blue Jays’ No. 23-ranked prospect per MLB Pipeline has yet to be caught and knows that this could be the strength that propels him through the minor-league ranks.
“I feel like I’m understanding I have a really elite tool of speed. Just talking to the coaches, I’m understanding, I can impact the game in more ways than hitting,” Casey said. “I can impact the game on the bases and in the outfield too. I think the one thing I’m trying to learn is how to use that tool to my advantage. I just want to learn how to be a better baserunner and defender.”
