The Toronto Blue Jays will be represented in the Arizona Fall League’s upcoming Fall Stars Game.
Left-handed relief pitching prospect Kai Peterson was named to the American League roster and will participate in the 19th annual edition of the showcase on Sunday at Sloan Park in Mesa, Ariz.
Peterson has recorded a 7.36 ERA with eight strikeouts and eight walks over 7 1/3 innings, but had a successful minor-league season, pitching to a 3.04 ERA with 61 strikeouts and 29 walks over 50 1/3 innings split between High-A Vancouver and Double-A New Hampshire. The 23-year-old earned the bump from the Canadians to the Fisher Cats in mid-August after allowing only one run and striking out 19 batters in his final 18 2/3 innings in Double-A.
Drafted in the 20th round of the 2023 amateur draft, Peterson has an interesting profile for a reliever. He doesn’t have overpowering stuff; instead, he uses a five-pitch mix to keep hitters off balance out of the bullpen. Peterson does throw his sinker, which averages 92.8 m.p.h. – the majority of the time, and mixes in a slider, curveball, changeup and four-seam fastball.
Cutter Coffey (IF), Edward Duran (C), Josh Kasevich (IF), Alex Amalfi (RHP), Yondrei Rojas (RHP), Chay Yeager (RHP) and Kelena Sauer (RHP) all have represented the Blue Jays on the Glendale Desert Dogs in this year’s AFL competition.
There are also eight of MLB Pipeline’s top-100 prospects participating in the game. The AL team includes No. 2 prospect Kevin McGonigle (Detroit Tigers, SS), No. 62 Blake Mitchell (Kansas City Royals, C), No. 75 Jonny Farmelo (Seattle Mariners, OF) and No. 88 Hagen Smith (Chicago White Sox, LHP). The other four will take the field for the National League side: No. 48 Alfredo Duno (C), No. 80 Rhett Lowder (RHP) and No. 94 Cam Collier (3B) will all represent the Cincinnati Reds and and No. 61-ranked slugger Charlie Condon (OF) is there for the Colorado Rockies.
