Not only are the Toronto Blue Jays making noise on the big league stage, but the minors are gaining chatter as well, specifically Khal Stephen. The Blue Jays’ prospect pitcher was named the Northwest League (NWL) Pitcher of the Month for June. He is the first Canadian to earn the honour since last July when Alex Amalfi took home the honour.
Stephen, a right-handed pitching prospect for the Vancouver Canadians, has been dominating in his role and making noise in his league of play. June has been hot for the right-hander, as he’s gone 3-1 in five starts, and a slim ERA of 0.95.
This past month, he allowed just 18 hits (three for extra bases) and walked six while striking out 33 batters. He kept opposing bats silent, generating a .180 batting average against. He’s also posted a .224 OBP and a .250 SLG against through his five outings in June.
The prospect’s stint in high-A Vancouver alone is impressive, starting seven games with a 4-1 record and a 0.963 WHIP. Within two levels of play in 2025, Stephen has amassed a 7-1 record with 75 and 2/3 innings of work, including eight outings in single-A. He’s struck out 86 total batters while walking only 16 batters; Stephen has faced a total of 297 batters this season. He holds a total 1.90 ERA and a 2.14 RA9 between low and high-A.
With the MLB Draft approaching, this performance and accolade are refreshing, as Stephen was a product of last year’s crop of new talent. He was drafted in the second round of the 2024 MLB draft out of Mississippi State University. The big 6-foot-4 right-handed prospect is ranked ninth on the Blue Jays’ Top 30 prospect list via MLB Pipeline. He shows above-average command with a mid-90s darting fastball that usually misses barrels. His changeup is his out-pitch, which is dependable if located well, while his curveball is next up on the reliability side.
Stephen looks to continue his streak of dominance on Saturday, July 5th, as they take on the AquaSox in Everett. Should he continue to dominate, a move to join Trey Yesavage in double-A may be in the cards.
