Ricky Tiedemann has hit a bit of a snag in his climb back up the injury-laden mountain.
The 23-year-old pitching prospect was originally slated to make his 2026 season debut with Single-A Dunedin on Tuesday, but he didn’t end up pitching in what would’ve been his third overall rehab appearance — and now we know why.
According to Toronto Blue Jays manager John Schneider, Tiedemann was scratched from that outing due to “a sore neck,” which now clouds the timing of his return to the mound.
This serves as the latest setback in Tiedemann’s journey since missing all of 2025 due to Tommy John surgery, and the second he’s endured this year. He was shut down for multiple weeks midway through spring training after experiencing left elbow soreness, pausing his 1-2 inning build-up and ultimately resulting in a season-opening IL stint.
The hope now, of course, is that this isn’t a serious ailment for the lefty hurler. After being limited to countless bullpen sessions and simulated game outings for all of April and May, he finally returned to game action earlier this month, making a pair of one-inning appearances in the Florida Complex League.
It seemed like momentum was, at long last, on Tiedemann’s side again. And perhaps that’ll return once this current injury concern dissipates.
Until he’s back pitching in games, though, there’ll likely be an unsettling sensation at the pit of everyone’s stomach.
