Recently acquired infielder Lenyn Sosa has officially been activated ahead of Tuesday’s series opener against the Milwaukee Brewers, the Toronto Blue Jays announced prior to first pitch.
To make room, the club has optioned utility player Tyler Fitzgerald — who’s in his final option year — to Triple-A Buffalo. He had been with the team since Addison Barger (left ankle) landed on the 10-day injured list last week despite failing to appear in a single game following his call-up.
Sosa, acquired from the Chicago White Sox in Monday’s trade for outfield prospect Jordan Rich and a player to be named later or cash considerations, will be available off the bench versus the Brewers on Tuesday. The 26-year-old has already appeared in 12 games this season, but had struggled at the plate prior to being traded, hitting 7-for-33 with three RBIs, seven strikeouts and zero walks.
The right-handed-hitting infielder — who’s out of options — enjoyed a career year last season with the White Sox, clubbing 22 home runs and driving in 75 while slashing .264/.293/.434 with an even 100 wRC+ (league average) in 140 games, worth 1.3 fWAR — all career-bests.
The bat-first native of Venezuela features prior experience at first, second and third base as well as shortstop across his five major league seasons. He made seven of his 10 starts with Chicago at designated hitter this season, while making the other at first (two) and second base (one).
It’ll be interesting to see how the Blue Jays intend to utilize Sosa — who can provide a bit of pop by maximizing his launch angle outputs and pulling fly balls, the source behind last season’s power surge — until Barger returns, considering Fitzgerald wasn’t able to crack his way into the lineup during his brief stint with the big-league club.
