The Toronto Blue Jays carousel of relief pitchers continues.
Ahead of Wednesday’s series finale against the Miami Marlins, the Blue Jays made a roster move. Needing more pitching help, the Jays optioned Tanner Andrews to the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons. In his place, they selected Austin Voth’s contract and added him to the 26-man roster. To make room on the 40-man roster, Alejandro Kirk was placed on the 60-day injured list.
Starting with Kirk, this doesn’t change his timetable at all. He’s expected to return soon, and begin his rehab outing even sooner. The move to the 60-day injured list is just retroactive to the first day he was placed on the injured list (April 5th). He’ll be eligible to come off the 60-day IL on June 4th
Getting Kirk back in the lineup will be huge for the Blue Jays because when he’s at his best, he’s one of the best catchers in the big leagues. Last season, he slashed .282/.348/.421 with a career-high 15 home runs in 506 plate appearances while also providing stellar defence.
Whenever the Blue Jays activate Kirk, they’ll need to make a tough decision regarding their backup catcher. Brandon Valenzuela has been far better than Tyler Heineman this season, but Heineman is out of options, meaning he’ll need to be designated for assignment if not on the 26-man roster.
This isn’t Voth’s first go-around with the Blue Jays this season. In early April, he was called up to eat some innings against the Chicago White Sox. On April 5th, he went two and two-thirds innings with an earned run allowed, giving him a 3.38 ERA and 3.45 FIP this season.
The 33-year-old had a successful 2024 season, posting a 3.69 ERA and 4.12 FIP in 61 innings pitched with the Seattle Mariners. Looking to be a starter, Voth pitched in Japan, where he had a 3.96 ERA and 2.90 FIP in 125 innings pitched.
Expect him to play a role in Friday’s game, as the Jays look to cover Dylan Cease’s spot in the rotation.
As for Andrews, he was called up when Cease landed on the 15-day injured list on Monday. The 30-year-old made his big league debut the same day, going 1-2-3 in the top of the ninth in a blowout loss. Andrews pitched on Tuesday as well, throwing two scoreless innings. Over the two days, Andrews threw 43 pitches, so it’s not particularly surprising that he was optioned.
