The Toronto Blue Jays received some more bad news on the injury front ahead of Monday’s series opener against the Miami Marlins.
Dylan Cease departed Sunday afternoon’s game in the fifth inning with what was called “mild left hamstring discomfort”. Well on Monday afternoon, Cease was placed on the 15 injured list, meaning he’ll miss his next two starts at the very least.
This is a massive blow for the Blue Jays, as Cease has been their best starter so far this season. Over his 11 starts, Cease has a 3.05 ERA and 2.57 FIP in 62 innings pitched, with a league leading 92 strikeouts for a 35.7 K%. After surrendering just one home run over his first nine starts, Cease has given up four long balls over his last two starts.
On top of losing a very talented pitcher, the Jays’ rotation continues to be decimated due to injury. Since the season started, Max Scherzer and Cody Ponce have hit the injured list. The latter will miss the entirety of the season after pitching just over two innings, while Scherzer hasn’t pitched since April.
Moreover, the Jays placed José Berríos, Shane Bieber, and Trey Yesavage on the IL before the season began. Thankfully, Yesavage has returned and has been terrific, while Bieber made his first rehab start on Monday afternoon. As for Berríos, he received Tommy John surgery earlier this month and won’t pitch again until some time next season.
The Blue Jays like their durable starting pitchers, and both Cease and Berríos have been just that. Late last season, Berríos was placed on the 15-day injured list for the first time in his big league career. Cease also hasn’t been on the big league injured list, except for a brief two-day stint in 2021 due to having COVID-like symptoms. That said, he missed some time in the minor leagues, having two separate stints.
It’s unclear who’ll be called up in place, with CJ Van Eyk and Chad Dallas being solid options on the farm. Jake Bloss would be a good candidate, but he’s working his way back from injury and has made just three rehab starts.
Cease’s start is on Friday, the day after the Blue Jays’ bullpen day. In the midst of a 17 games in 17 days, losing Cease is a big blow.
Update: The Blue Jays made the move official, selecting Tanner Andrews’ contract and adding him to the 26-man roster. Over 16 outings with the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons this season, the 30-year-old right-handed pitcher has a 1.35 ERA and 4.22 FIP in 20 innings pitched. He’ll be active for Monday’s game, and if he is involved in the game, it’ll be his big league debut.
