The Toronto Blue Jays are starting to look like themselves.
For the first time this season, the Blue Jays have won consecutive series. After taking two of three from the Los Angeles Angels during the week, the Blue Jays returned home and took two of three from the Cleveland Guardians to move to 12-15.
Max Scherzer started Friday’s game, and it went as you’d expect it to. Before the Blue Jays even had a chance to bat, the Guardians had a 5-0 lead. The Blue Jays got to within two thanks to home runs from Kazuma Okamoto and Jesús Sánchez, but Scherzer allowed two more runs in the top of the third before being pulled.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Jays made it 7-4, but the Guardians got that run back in the top of the sixth. Two runs were scored by the Blue Jays in the bottom of the sixth to get them within two, and it even looked as if they were going to tie it. The first two batters got on base in the bottom of the ninth, but pinch hitter Eloy Jiménez grounded into a double play, then Davis Schneider struck out in an 8-6 loss.
Saturday went better for the Blue Jays. The Guardians took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third, but Okamoto hit a carbon copy of his home run from the day prior to tie it at one in the bottom of the fourth. In the bottom of the sixth, the Blue Jays had one of their classic inning, scoring three thanks to a clutch two RBI double courtesy of Andrés Giménez.
The teams exchanged runs in the seventh, as David Fry went deep off Kevin Gausman and the Blue Jays walked in a run with no outs and the bases loaded. They were unable to score any more runs, which gave Louis Varland his second save opportunity. The Guardians got a run, the first earned run Varland has given up all season, but he struck out two to strand the bases loaded.
Sunday was the rubber match between the two teams. In the bottom of the first, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit a single to cash in a run, followed by Sánchez’s sacrifice fly. They held on to the 2-0 lead until the top of the fifth, when Patrick Corbin gave up two before being yanked.
That was no problem, as Guerrero Jr. hit a lead-off double in the sixth, followed by Sánchez’s second home run of the series. Varland picked up his second save in as many days, with the Blue Jays picking up a 4-2 victory to capture the series.
It took until April, but the Blue Jays will play their first series against an American League opponent this week, hosting the Boston Red Sox for a three-game series. The series opener is on Monday.
