The Toronto Blue Jays have traded catcher Danny Jansen to the Boston Red Sox, according to multiple reports.
News of the deal first broke during the Jays’ 7-3 win over the Rangers on Saturday afternoon and was first reported by The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal. A return in the trade is not yet known at the time of publishing.
Jansen, 29, is a pending free agent with arbitration eligibility.
Drafted by the Jays in the 16th round of the 2013 draft, he worked his way through every level of the organization before breaking into the big leagues in 2018 at 23 years old. His most successful year with the team came in 2022, when he slashed .260/.339/.516 for a .855 OPS across 72 games.
Long a fan favourite, Jansen has struggled this season, slashing .212/.303/.671 for a .671 OPS, one of the lowest rates in his career. Still, he was a player who would have significant hot streaks for the team where he would be excellent at the plate.
Missing the start of the season due to injury, he had one of those hot streaks when he entered the lineup. Amid a 24-game stretch between April 16th and May 23rd, he slashed .329/.402/.658 for a 1.060 OPS, hitting five home runs and 10 doubles. Since then, however, his slash line has fallen off a cliff, down to .139/.241/.189 for a .430 OPS, hitting just one home run.
While framing and catching runners stealing have never been his strength, he’s posted a 98th percentile blocks above average, according to Baseball Savant, having a 94th percentile chase rate and plus whiff rates, strikeout rates and walk rates. Unfortunately for him, he’s never been able to replicate the offensive success he had in 2022.
Jansen marks the second catcher the team has traded in recent years, moving Gabriel Moreno, along with outfielder Lourdes Gurreil Jr., to the Arizona Diamondbacks for Daulton Varsho in Dec. 2022.
The Jays have been active in recent days in the trade market, trading reliever Yimi Garcia to the Seattle Mariners for speedy outfielder Jonatan Clase and catcher Jacob Sharp on Friday, and sending Nate Pearson to the Chicago Cubs for two prospects earlier Saturday.
