The Toronto Blue Jays made yet another trade.
Following their 7-4 defeat to the Texas Rangers on Saturday evening, the Jays traded Hayden Juenger to the Athletics for Owen Carapellotti, a 23-year-old catching prospect.
Juenger was designated for assignment earlier this week to make room for Shane Bieber. The right-handed pitcher was drafted in the sixth round of the 2021 draft and hit the ground running in his first full season, reaching Triple-A as a 21-year-old.
He finished the 2022 season with a 3.76 ERA and 5.15 FIP in 88.2 innings pitched, starting 19 of the 38 games he appeared in that season. Unfortunately, Juenger’s career stalled out from there, spending the 2023, 2024, and 2025 seasons in Triple-A.
Juenger finally got back on track with the Buffalo Bisons this season, posting a 2.59 ERA and 2.37 FIP in 24.1 innings pitched, even earning a brief call-up to the Blue Jays where he made two appearances. However, he was the odd-man out on the 40-man roster, with the Jays deciding to DFA him.
As for the prospect the Jays are getting back, Carapellotti spent four seasons with Georgetown University from 2022 until 2025, slashing .289/.403/.565 with 52 home runs in 956 plate appearances. Carapellotti was teammates with Jake Bloss in 2023.
Shortly after the 2025 draft, the Athletics signed Carapellotti as a nondrafted free agent. Through his first 20 professional games, the 23-year-old is slashing .267/.389/.627 with eight home runs and three doubles in 90 plate appearances with the Athletics’ Single-A team. The catcher is currently on the seven-day injured list.
Carapellotti joins the Jays farm system which has seen the emergence of a handful of notable catchers. Edward Duran has had a slow start to his season, but Brandon Valenzuela swiftly became the Blue Jays’ back up catcher. They also have two intriguing catching prospects in the rookie leagues, Franklin Rojas and Juan Caricote.
