Before Sunday’s game against the Toronto Blue Jays and Seattle Mariners, the Blue Jays had a media availability.
Trey Yesavage was one of the players at the podium, and before any questions, the 22-year-old pitcher addressed a disturbing trend in baseball. Paraphrasing the whole quote (that you can see below), Yesavage noted that people in his immediate circle were receiving unwarranted negative attention for his performance on the field.
That performance came last Sunday against the New York Yankees, when he pitched five and one-third scoreless innings with 11 strikeouts over the Yankees, a terrific postseason debut. Similarly, Vladimir Guerrero Jr.’s family were in The Bronx for Game 4, and there’s footage of bottles being thrown at them.
The sad thing is that it happened to Yankees pitcher Cam Schlittler earlier this month. Boston Red Sox fans went after his family ahead of Game 3 of the American League Wild Card Series, with the Yankees’ pitcher telling his family not to respond. He personally responded by dominating the Red Sox for eight innings to set up a matchup against the Blue Jays in the American League Divisional Series.
With social media becoming as prevalent as it is in the modern day, more and more cases like this have happened. There are bad apples in every fan base, and chirping and heckling are all but expected at the game (to a point). That said, there is a line that can’t be crossed, whether that’s insulting a player on a personal level or going after their family. It’s just not something that should ever happen.
Hopefully, the same situation doesn’t happen in the American League Championship Series, as the Blue Jays take on the Mariners for a date in the World Series. Yesavage is the expected starter for Game 2 of the series, which is set to take place on Monday at just past 5:00 PM ET.
