The Toronto Blue Jays beat the Athletics 7-6 last night, and within that win, some history was made at the plate. First baseman and Blue Jays slugger Vladimir Guerrero collected two hits last night on the West Coast, both singles, and his first knock that came in the top of the fifth was his 1000th hit in the big leagues, joining a prestigious club that includes just nine others.
At 26 years old, Guerrero is in his seventh season at the big league level and owns a .287/.365/.494 slash line and a .859 OPS through 911 games and 3489 at-bats. His 1001 hits have been spread across various forms, including 196 doubles (19.6%), six triples (0.6%), and 172 home runs (17.2%) while also amassing 553 RBIs and 403 walks in the process.
With his two hits last night, Guerrero still sits in tenth place on the Blue Jays hits leaderboard (he was ranked there beforehand) and now sits 27 hits behind Damaso Garcia, 50 hits behind Joe Carter, 81 hits behind Shannon Stewart, and 102 hits behind Jose Bautista. While it’s unlikely that Guerrero collects 100+ hits before the end of the year to pass Bautista for the sixth spot, barring another MVP-level finish to the season like last year, there is a chance he could pass Stewart by season’s end. Guerrero currently sits at 96 hits on the year, and his single-season career high came last year when he put up 199 hits, the sixth highest single-season total in Blue Jays franchise history.
Considering Guerrero signed a 14-year deal earlier this winter, the likelihood that the Montreal-born slugger sits at the top of almost every offensive statistical category by the time his career is over is a solid bet. The Blue Jays do not have a single player who reached the 2000 hit level under their franchise leaderboard, with Tony Fernandez leading the charge at 1583. Guerrero is also chasing down Carlos Delgado in home runs (336), doubles (343), RBIs (1058), and walks (827), but still has some time to go to catch Delgado in these categories, ranking eighth in homers and ninth in RBIs and base on balls as of right now.
The soon-to-be five-time All-Star and two-time Silver Slugger Award winner is one of the top bats in the game, and with his long-term deal in place, we will continue to see him break franchise records past the next decade and beyond.
