The Toronto Blue Jays can’t afford any more injuries if they have any hopes of climbing back into the American League playoff race.
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. left Tuesday night’s game against the Washington Nationals before the bottom of the fourth inning due to what the team is calling right hamstring tightness.
The Blue Jays’ first baseman had gone 1-for-2 with an infield single before leaving the contest and was replaced at first by Kazuma Okamoto. On his single, Guerrero advanced to second base following a throwing error by Nationals third baseman Jorbit Vivas, but could be seen wincing and stretching once he pulled into second base.
Through 103 games this season, Guerrero is batting .265 with six home runs and 44 RBIs. While the six home runs are a disappointment, Guerrero had started to swing the bat better as of late, highlighted by a .385 average over his past seven games.
If Guerrero were to need a stint on the injured list, a spot could open up for Sean Keys to receive regular playing time in the big leagues following his 12-game stint with the Blue Jays earlier this season. In his 12 games, Keys batted .167 with one home run and five RBIs.
