It’s not a good day on the injury front for the Toronto Blue Jays.
Before Friday’s game against the San Francisco Giants, John Schneider gave an update on injured players, and there was minimal good news.
- Yimi García has ulnar nerve symptoms in his pitching elbow
- Ryan Burr will undergo season-ending surgery
- Bowden Francis has been shut down due to his shoulder flaring up
- Nick Sandlin is playing catch
- Paxton Schultz continues his rehab assignment in Buffalo
- Alek Manaoh starts for the Dunedin Blue Jays on Sunday
- Daulton Varsho will play in a rehab game on Friday
- Andrés Giménez is with the team on some hitting
- Anthony Santander still hasn’t hit
Starting with the bad news, losing García is devastating to the bullpen, as he was projected to be the Blue Jays’ setup man this season. Originally placed on the Injured List for a sprained ankle, an injury to his pitching arm is far more concerning. This season, the righty had a 3.86 ERA and 3.80 FIP in 21 innings pitched with a 27.8 K% and 13.3 BB%.
With injury, you can expect the Blue Jays to be active trying to bring in a high-leverage reliever or two before July 31st’s trade deadline. It also doesn’t help that Ryan Burr pitched just two innings before heading to the 60-day Injured List once again. He won’t be back this season.
Francis most recently pitched in mid-June, but was placed on the 15-day Injured List due to a shoulder injury. That shoulder was reaggravated, and he’s been shut down for another 10 days. The good news is that Nick Sandlin has been playing catch, while both Manoah and Schultz are on rehab assignment, the former starts on Sunday with the Single-A Dunedin Blue Jays.
Shifting to position players, another player on a rehab assignment is Varsho. He’ll make his second rehab appearance, as he appeared in the Florida Complex League Blue Jays’ game on Thursday.
Santander still hasn’t swung yet and will be heading to Toronto for a medical evaluation. Giménez is also in Toronto, but is hitting and doing defensive drills.
It’s safe to say that this trade deadline will be a big one based solely on the holes the team currently have due to injuries.
