With the 2025 trade deadline under a week away, the Toronto Blue Jays have an update on the majority of their players on the Injured List.
According to Sportsnet’s Arden Zwelling, Anthony Santander remains week-to-week, Alek Manoah will pitch in a simulated game on Saturday, Andrés Giménez is running in Toronto, Daulton Varsho will move to Triple-A on his rehab assignment, and both Yimi García and Nick Sandlin received cortisone shots in their elbows.
Starting with Santander, he’s week-to-week with the shoulder injury and is heading back to Florida to rehab. On top of the injuries, it hasn’t been a great season for the switch-hitting outfielder, as he’s slashing .179/.273/.304 with six home runs in 209 plate appearances.
A notoriously slow starter, there was a stretch of 11 games at the end of April/beginning of May where he seemed to get going, slashing .227/.320/.455 with three home runs in 50 plate appearances for a 117 wRC+. Unfortunately, the first report of his shoulder injury came on May 10, in which his play regressed until eventually being placed on the Injured List.
Another position player the Jays acquired in the off-season, who has spent a chunk of the season injured, is Giménez. The second baseman is on the Injured List thanks to an ankle injury, but he has started running the bases, and it’s going good, according to Blue Jays manager John Schneider.
Andres Gimenez (ankle) began a running progression in Toronto on Thursday. Blue Jays manager John Schneider says it “went better than expected.”
Since May, Giménez is slashing .275/.345/.363 with two home runs in 114 plate appearances, with a 5.3 BB% and 11.4 K% for a 104 wRC+. While that is slightly above average, that’s all he needs to be with the bat, given how good he is defensively. Sadly, he’s had two separate stints on the Injured List in that span.
Varsho is another player who has had two separate stints on the Injured List this season. He’ll move up to the Buffalo Bisons on Friday to continue his rehab assignment, with a possible return to the Blue Jays’ lineup on Monday.
Daulton Varsho’s (hamstring) rehab will move to triple-A Buffalo on Friday. He’ll be there through the weekend. If all goes well, Varsho could rejoin Blue Jays in Baltimore next week.
This season, Varsho has raked. In Spring Training, he hit four home runs in just 37 plate appearances. In 100 plate appearances with the Blue Jays, he hit eight home runs to take sole possession of first on the team at the time. So far on his rehab assignment with the Dunedin Blue Jays, he’s hit two home runs. Add on fantastic defence in centre field, and Varsho will be a nice deadline add for the Jays.
Speaking of deadline adds, it appears that the bullpen will biggest area of need coming into July 31st’s trade deadline. Both García and Sandlin received cortisone shots in their elbow, the former being shut down for two weeks and the former for one week.
Blue Jays relievers Yimi Garcia and Nick Sandlin both had cortisone shots in their elbows this week. Garcia will be down from throwing for two weeks; Sandlin for at least a week. Then they’ll begin ramping back up.
Like Varsho and Giménez, García and Sandlin have had two separate stints on the Injured List now. This season, García has a 3.86 ERA and 3.81 FIP in 21 innings pitched. One of those innings came shortly after his return from the Injured List, before returning to the Injured List immediately after. Sandlin has spent the majority of the season also on the Injured List. When healthy, the right-handed pitcher has a 2.20 ERA and 4.56 FIP in 16.1 innings pitched, or 19 games played. While his walk rate is high (11.6%), Sandlin has been a useful piece to the bullpen when healthy.
Some positive news for pitchers on the Injured List regards Alek Manoah. So far in his return from Tommy John surgery, he has pitched in two games for the Dunedin Blue Jays, most recently pitching two innings on Sunday. With the D-Jays on the road this week, he’ll throw in a simulated game at the Complex.
Alek Manoah (Tommy John) will throw a simulated game in Dunedin on Saturday. Dunedin Blue Jays are on the road and club wants to better control his pitch count.
While it’s not realistic to believe Manoah can return to his 2022 form, it’s nice to hope he finds what made him so successful in his first two big league seasons.
