News: Trey Yesavage had surgery to repair his left meniscus. The #BlueJays are not ruling him out for the year, and will evaluate him over the next few weeks. It will obviously depend on how competitive they are down the stretch, too.

Trey Yesavage has gone under the knife, putting the remainder of his 2026 season in jeopardy.
The 23-year-old rookie underwent surgery to repair the meniscus injury in his left knee this week, as Toronto Blue Jays manager John Schneider revealed on Tuesday. The club plans to re-evaluate his status over the next few weeks.
For now, they aren’t considering this season-ending surgery and remain hopeful that Yesavage can pitch again before September concludes.
Yesavage felt a pinching sensation in his left knee while throwing his warm-up pitches before the third inning of his latest start against the Houston Astros on Aug. 4. He was forced to leave the game alongside Schneider and one of the club’s trainers. One day later, he was placed on the 15-day injured list with left knee inflammation.
The Blue Jays sent their young right-hander starter to visit a knee specialist in Dallas on Monday, during which they ultimately determined that he’d require surgery to address the ailment.
Whether this team remains alive in the American League wild-card hunt will likely impact Yesavage’s chances of making a late-season, post-surgery return or will end up pivoting his focus towards enjoying a healthy off-season and being 100 per cent recovered in 2027.
In the meantime, with Jameson Taillon becoming the latest member of Toronto’s long list of injured players, this starting rotation is once again down to four healthy arms. But since Taillon’s vacated spot won’t come around until Saturday, Schneider has listed the club’s pitching plans as TBD.
For Yesavage, this is another difficult break in what’s been a challenging first full major league campaign. After beginning this season on the IL with a right shoulder impingement, he’s made 18 starts, pitching to a 3.65 ERA and 4.07 FIP with an 11.7 per cent strikeout-minus-walk rate across 93.2 innings.
The only solace of this injury-slowed season is that it’s helped the Blue Jays minimize his workload after his innings total jumped to 139.2 a year ago between the regular season (majors and minors) and post-season, followed by the shortest off-season of his young career.
