In a week that will be known as his coming out party, rookie Vladimir Guerrero Jr. has won his first (of probably many) Player of the Week award.
Guerrero is the youngest player in Jays history to win the award, marking another milestone into the young player’s career.
During this week, he hit .333 with four home runs, including his first major-league homer, and had a .905 OPS over six games. That brings his season slash line to a respectable .235/.325/.441 with a total of 10 RBI in 2019 so far.
It’s not what is expected of him, but Vlad is really demonstrating why he was baseball’s top prospect for all of last year and caused fans to clamour for his promotion. He is here and he is raking.
It’s only been 77 plate appearances, but Guerrero Jr. is making an impact on the league and the Blue Jays itself.
He struggled earlier this season, not getting the right amount of pitches in the heart of the zone can have that effect, but he has perfectly recovered and winning the Player of the Week award should put all doubts about his ability to bed.
