Charles McAdoo is a perfect example of how it’s not how you start, but how you finish.
This is Blue Jays Nation’s annual mid-season prospect list, where we’ll take a look at the 50 best prospects in the Toronto Blue Jays organization. I’ll look at the player’s stats, what other publications have to say, as well as my own observations of the players.
McAdoo is one of four prospects acquired before the 2024 trade deadline that rank in our top-20, as the third baseman ranks as the 12th-best Blue Jays’ prospect in our mid-season update. If you missed who ranked as the 13th-best Blue Jays’ prospect, you can read about Orelvis Martínez here.
Getting to know Charles McAdoo…
Position: Third base
Bats: Right
Born: March 6th, 2002
Acquired: Trade with the Pittsburgh Pirates
Previous ranking: 13th (2025 pre-season)
Standing at 6’1”, 210 lbs, McAdoo was selected in the 13th round of the 2023 draft by the Pittsburgh Pirates, signing for a bonus of $150,000. The third baseman exceeded expectations immediately, slashing .302/.412/.510 with five home runs in 114 plate appearances at the Single-A level to end the 2023 season.
McAdoo began the 2024 season in High-A, slashing .336/.415/.561 with nine home runs in 258 plate appearances for a 168 wRC+. After his promotion to Double-A, the 23-year-old third baseman slashed .269/.347/.490 with five home runs in 118 plate appearances for a 134 wRC+.
On 2024’s trade deadline day, the Pittsburgh Pirates sent McAdoo to the Toronto Blue Jays in exchange for Isiah Kiner-Falefa, a trade that has come full circle as the Jays claimed Kiner-Falefa off waivers.
After the trade, McAdoo didn’t find the same success to end the season, slashing .185/.287/.323 with three home runs in 143 plate appearances for an 80 wRC+. That tough start continued to begin the season, as McAdoo slashed .193/.273/.261 with one home run in 132 plate appearances for a 61 wRC+ from the beginning of the season until he was placed on the development list. More worryingly was his 36.4 K% in that span.
Upon returning from the development list a week later, McAdoo has hit 15 home runs and is slashing .265/.336/.470 for a 133 wRC+. More importantly, his K% has dropped to 25.9% over this span.
In MLB Pipeline’s mid-season update, McAdoo ranked as their 16th-best Blue Jays prospect. He has above-average power and a strong arm, but is a fringy hitter with fringy defence at third. McAdoo is also a below-average runner. The power is intriguing as he has quick bat speed, but his future position is still up in the air.
