The prospect we’ll look at today may be the third baseman of the future.
This is Blue Jays Nation’s annual Pre-Season Prospect Countdown, this time looking at the top 40 prospects in the organization. We’ll look at the player’s stats, my observations, and other publications’ scouting reports if available.
Let’s take a look at our 13th-best Toronto Blue Jays prospect, Charles McAdoo!
Getting to know Charles McAdoo…
Position: Third base
Bats: Right
Born: March 6, 2002
Acquired: Trade with the Pirates
Previous ranking: 14
McAdoo was selected in the 13th round of the 2023 draft by the Pittsburgh Pirates after spending three seasons at San Jose University. He had a solid professional debut in 2023, slashing .302/.412/.510 with five home runs in 114 plate appearances with a 14.9 BB% and a 19.3 K% for a 151 wRC+.
His stock drastically rose after his stint with the Pirates’ High-A team. In 258 plate appearances, McAdoo slashed .336/.415/.561 with nine home runs, with a 10.5 BB% and a 21.7 K% for a 172 wRC+. Upon his promotion to the Pirates’ Double-A team, McAdoo slashed .269/.347/.490 with five home runs in 118 plate appearances, with an 11 BB% and a 24.6 K% for a 135 wRC+.
Before the trade deadline, the Pirates traded him to the Blue Jays in exchange for Isiah Kiner-Falefa, with McAdoo finishing his season with the New Hampshire Fisher Cats. In 143 plate appearances, he slashed .185/.287/.323 with three home runs, with a 9.8 BB% and a 30.1 K%.
McAdoo ranked as MLB Pipeline’s seventh-best Blue Jays prospect in their mid-season update. According to his scouting report, the third baseman has a good feel for hitting and hits for power (his 17 home runs in 2024 would’ve been tied for third-most in the organization). McAdoo doesn’t struggle with velocity and has a good approach at the plate, rarely chasing outside the zone. Defensively, his spot is still undetermined as he could play third base, first base, or the corner outfield. He also has experience playing second base.
