Today’s prospect is the first one on the list acquired before the 2024 trade deadline.
This is Blue Jays Nation’s annual Pre-Season Prospect Countdown, this time looking at the top 40 prospects in the organization. We’ll look at the player’s stats, my observations, and other publications’ scouting reports if available.
Let’s take a look at our 36th-ranked prospect, Yohendrick Piñango!
Getting to know Yohendrick Piñango…
Position: Outfield
Bats: Left
Born: May 7, 2002
Acquired: Trade with the Chicago Cubs
Previous ranking: 28th
Piñango was signed for $400,000 by the Chicago Cubs during the 2018 International Free Agency period. He made his debut the following season, slashing .358/.427/.442 with no home runs in the Dominican Summer League. In 2021, he slashed .276/.327/.373 with five home runs in 456 plate appearances, before hitting 13 home runs in 495 plate appearances in High-A the following year.
For the third straight season, he played with the Cubs High-A team, spending his entire 2023 season there. Overall, he slashed .247/.317/.349 with six home runs in 439 plate appearances. Piñango started the 2024 season in High-A (again), where he slashed .340/.451/.610 with five home runs in 122 plate appearances, earning a call-up to Double-A before the trade.
In 225 plate appearances with the Cubs’ Double-A team, he slashed .223/.316/.345 with four home runs before being traded to the Blue Jays along with Josh Rivera for Nate Pearson. With the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, Piñango slashed .179/.244/.274 with one home run in 127 plate appearances for a 51 wRC+.
According to MLB Pipeline’s mid-season prospect update, Piñango ranked as the Blue Jays’ 21st-best prospect. He has good bat-to-ball skills (despite his batting average in New Hampshire) and has improved his swing decisions over the years. Piñango has limited power thanks to his 5’11”, 170 lb frame. He’ll likely stick in a corner outfield spot and figures to be a fourth outfielder unless he starts to hit for more power.
