The Toronto Blue Jays did a great job at the 2024 trade deadline, picking up a handful of solid prospects, including today’s prospect.
This is Blue Jays Nation’s annual Pre-Season Prospect Countdown, this time looking at the top 40 prospects in the organization. We’ll look at the player’s stats, my observations, and other publications’ scouting reports if available.
Let’s take a look at our 30th-ranked Blue Jays prospect, Cutter Coffey.

Getting to know Cutter Coffey…

Position: Third base/Shortstop
Bats: Right
Born: May 21, 2004
Acquired: Trade with Red Sox
Previous ranking: 25th
Coffey was selected in the second round of the 2022 draft by the Red Sox and made his debut the same season. In the Florida Complex League, the infielder slashed .125/.300/.156 with no home runs in 40 plate appearances in his first taste of professional action.
The 2023 season was his first professional season, starting the season in Single-A. With the Red Sox’s Single-A team, he slashed .226/.341/.348 with six home runs in 349 plate appearances for a 102 wRC+. He was called up to High-A to end the season, where he had a .136/.253/.167 slash line with no home runs in 79 plate appearances.
Coffey repeated the season in High-A, where he hit significantly better, slashing .238/.321/.463 with a career-best 14 home runs in 271 plate appearances for a 122 wRC+. Moreover, his K% sat at 24% with a 10.3 BB%, as the Red Sox traded him, Eddinson Paulino, and Gilberto Batista to the Blue Jays for Danny Jansen.
After the trade, the Blue Jays placed Coffey in High-A where he slashed .185/.309/.272 with one home run in 97 plate appearances for a 13.4 BB% and a 25.8 K% for a 73 wRC+.
In MLB Pipeline’s mid-season update, Coffey ranked as the Blue Jays’ 22nd-best prospect. Having been a two-way prospect in high school, Coffey features a strong arm that will keep him at third base. His power is his best tool with the bat and he hit a career-high 15 home runs last season but his hit tool lags behind quite a bit.
