The question for the 2025 season is whether or not Dahian Santos will pitch in the rotation or the bullpen.
This is Blue Jays Nation’s annual Pre-Season Prospect Countdown, this time looking at the top 40 prospects in the organization. We’ll look at the player’s stats, my observations, and other publications’ scouting reports if available.
Let’s take a look at the 32nd-best prospect in the Toronto Blue Jays’ system, Dahian Santos!
Getting to know Dahian Santos….
Position: Pitcher
Throws: Right
Born: February 26, 2003
Acquired: 2019 International Free Agency
Previous ranking: 24
The Blue Jays signed Santos during the 2019 International Free Agency period, with the Venezuelan native making his professional debut in 2021. That season, he had a 5.58 ERA and a 4.50 FIP in 40.1 innings pitched between the Florida Complex League and Single-A. The following season, he had a 3.44 ERA and a 3.51 FIP in 73.1 innings pitched in Single-A with a 39.3 K% and an 11.5 BB% but struggled in his four starts at the High-A level.
Santos pitched the entirety of the 2023 season with the High-A Vancouver Canadians, where he had a 3.54 ERA and a 4.78 FIP in 48.1 innings pitched with a 27.2 K% and a 13.1 BB%. However, his final outing was on Jul. 1, 2023, before spending the rest of the season injured.
Which brings us to last season. Santos didn’t make his season debut until mid-June and finished the season with a 5.55 ERA and a 5.17 FIP between the Florida Complex League, Single-A, and Double-A. The majority of his season was pitched in the latter, where he had a 6 ERA and a 5.08 FIP in 27 innings pitched, with a 25.8 K% and a 16.7 BB%.
Santos only made three starts all season, one on a rehab assignment and two in Double-A to end his season. The most innings he pitched in a single game was three, done in one of those starts on Sep. 4 as well as one in relief. It’ll be interesting to see whether the Blue Jays see him as a starter or a bulk reliever moving forward.
In MLB Pipeline’s mid-season update, Santos ranked as their 20th-best Blue Jays prospect. Without question, his best pitch is his slider as it’s a potential “out pitch” in the big leagues according to his scouting report. Moreover, Santos’ fastball sits in the low-90s with an average changeup. The 21-year-old’s command is still a concern which gives him more of a reliever profile.
