Today’s prospect was selected in the fourth round of the 2024 draft by the Toronto Blue Jays!
This is Blue Jays Nation’s annual Pre-Season Prospect Countdown, this time looking at the top 40 prospects in the organization. We’ll look at the player’s stats, my observations, and other publications’ scouting reports if available.
Let’s take a look at our 26th-best Blue Jays prospect, Sean Keys.
Getting to know Sean Keys…
Position: Third base
Bats: Left
Born: May 26, 2003
Acquired: 4th-round, 2024 draft
Previous ranking: 33rd
Keys went undrafted in high school and committed to Bucknell University, where he spent all three collegiate seasons. As a whole, he slashed .358/.476/.711 with 27 home runs in 452 plate appearances, including a junior season where he slashed .405/.535/.798 with 13 home runs in 213 plate appearances.
In turn, the Blue Jays used their fourth-round pick to select the third baseman. As of his mid-season countdown article, Keys was slashing .194/.268/.333 in 41 plate appearances with the Dunedin Blue Jays, but immediately got hot after and finished the season with a.293/.378/.451 slash line with a home run in 98 plate appearances.
Keys ranked as MLB Pipeline’s 24th-best Blue Jays prospect in their mid-season update. The 21-year-old improved his approach in 2024 and it’s rare for him to swing and miss according to his scouting report. His hit tool was graded a 55 with his power sitting at 45, although he hit 11 home runs with wooden bats in a summer league a few years back. Defensively, it’s likely that Keys will eventually move to first base as his scouting report notes he’s not athletic enough to play third base.
