Out of any Toronto Blue Jays prospect, today’s prospect had one of the biggest improvements in the system.
This is Blue Jays Nation’s annual Pre-Season Prospect Countdown, this time looking at the top 40 prospects in the organization. We’ll look at the player’s stats, my observations, and other publications’ scouting reports if available.
Let’s take a look at our 18th-best Blue Jays prospect, Riley Tirotta!
Getting to know Riley Tirotta…
Position: Infield
Bats: Right
Born: August 21, 1998
Acquired: 12th-round, 2021 draft
Previous Ranking: 17th
The Blue Jays selected Tirotta in the 12th round of the 2021 draft, with the University of Dayton talent making his professional debut shortly after. In 119 plate appearances with the Single-A Dunedin Blue Jays, Tirotta slashed .305/.429/.389 with one home run in 119 plate appearances for a 134 wRC+.
Tirotta’s 2022 season was spent mainly at the High-A level with the Vancouver Canadians, where he slashed .219/.314/.368 with six home runs in 283 plate appearances for a 93 wRC+. It’s worth noting that his 32.2 K% was concerning. In 2023, the infielder split time between High-A and Double-A, slashing .239/.351/.420 with 11 home runs in 376 plate appearances for a 113 wRC+, with a 28.5 K%.
Due to a rehab stint, Tirotta had 29 plate appearances with the Single-A Dunedin Blue Jays where he hit a home run. After returning from that injury, he spent 73 plate appearances with the Double-A New Hampshire Fisher Cats where he slashed .286/.438/.464 with two home runs. In Triple-A, Tirotta slashed .240/.360/.425 with 12 home runs, bringing his season home run total to 15. While his 27.3 K% was on the high side, Tirotta also posted an impressive 16.2 BB%.
The strikeouts remain a concern, but the 26-year-old tapped into more power in 2024 with that pop being paired with the ability to walk. Tirotta also plays all over the place, playing first base, third base, left field, and right field last season, with experience at second base in the past.
