Two of the three division leaders in the American League are very deep into minus money in MLB futures, which means any value play will entail a collapse.
For instance, the New York Yankees have moved to a -6600 favorite to claim the AL East title on the American League division odds at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com. The Tampa Bay Rays (+1400) and Boston Red Sox (+1500) now have double-digit odds in this prop.
Five weeks ago, the Yankees still offered betting value at -200, but thanks to a surge heading into the all-star break, they have extended their lead from 3.5 games to an even 10 over both the Rays and Red Sox.
Boston has managed to be in the wild-card race despite a pitching staff that is allowing more than five runs per game. A return to league-average pitching combined with continued strong run production over the final 60-plus games could cue a Red Sox rally.
The Minnesota Twins, as far as AL Central odds are concerned, have done a reverse-Yankees, and are now -425 favorites, ahead of the Cleveland Indians (+190). Five weeks ago, the Twins were at -6600 with Cleveland at +1100 at betting sites, but Cleveland has been carried by strong pitching to a charge that has pared the Twins’ division lead considerably.
Cleveland, the three-time defending AL Central champion, at nearly 2/1 odds, is still excellent value, although the Twins are capable of recovering.
As the chalk pick in the AL West, the Houston Astros (-6000) have regained a smidgen of betting value after plunging to -20000 five weeks ago. The main reason would seem to be that the Oakland Athletics (+750, from +2200) are hanging around and making sure Houston earns its third consecutive AL West banner.
Houston is getting over its injury bug with shortstop Carlos Correa re-integrating into a lineup that produces well over five runs per game, so it’s hard to see Oakland’s push for the division as sustainable.
