The Toronto Blue Jays are wearing some short-term woes and a long-term matchup problem as they enter their first series at their temporary home stadium. The Blue Jays are -115 favourites and the Los Angeles Angels are -105 underdogs with a 10.0-run total on the MLB odds for Thursday at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com.
The Blue Jays have not hosted Los Angeles in 21 months, but they are 7-13 in their last 20 home games against the Mike Trout-led Angels with the total going OVER 10 times at online betting sites, with two pushes. Toronto, which is playing this homestand at TD Ballpark in Dunedin, Fla., does have a 14-6 record over its last 20 home games as a -115 to -135 favourite, with an even 10-10 split on the totals. The Angels are 8-12 in their last 20 games as an away underdog, with the total going OVER 12 times.
Angels vs Blue Jays | OddsShark Matchup Report
The Angels, who played their first six games at home, are 4-2 and are averaging 5.5 runs per game with a .254 / .332 / .421 batting slash line. However, the Angels’ 4.83 earned-run average is 21st of 30 MLB teams.
The Blue Jays are 3-3, but their bats have been cold as they have scored just 3.3 runs per game with .214 / .279 / .368 batting while operating without slugging outfielder George Springer (oblique). Toronto’s pitching staff, however, boasts MLB’s seventh-best ERA at 3.12, and the relievers’ collective 1.96 is third-best.
Ross Stripling (3-4, 5.98 ERA, 7.7 strikeouts per nine innings since the start of 2020) will start on Thursday opposite fellow righthander Griffin Canning (2-3, 3.99 ERA, 8.9 SO/9 in the ’20 season), who is making his season debut. Stripling’s teams are 6-5 in his last 11 home starts. The Angels are 5-7 in Canning’s last 12 away starts, with the total going UNDER eight times.
Toronto has not declared a starting pitcher for Friday’s matchup. The Angels will start lefthander Andrew Heaney (4-4, 5.17 ERA, 9.56 SO/9 since the start of the ’20 season), who allowed seven runs over three innings in his first start of the season. Los Angeles is 2-5 in Heaney’s last seven starts on the road.
Neither team has announced a starting pitcher for the Saturday and Sunday matchups.
Righthander T.J. Zeuch, who pitched four scoreless innings in his season debut against the New York Yankees on April 4, could be in line to take another start as Toronto tries to get lefty Robbie Ray and righties Nate Pearson and Tom Hatch ready for their 2021 debuts. Ray, who is the closest of the three to returning, had a promising spring training with a 1.93 ERA.
Veteran righthander Tanner Roark (2-4, 7.28, 7.6 SO/9 over ’20-21) might be on a short least. Roark was lit up in his season debut against the Texas Rangers on Tuesday, allowing 10 balls with an exit velocity of at least 95 mph to be put in play, including three home runs. Roark’s recent struggles might cancel out his 1.40 ERA in 25.2 career innings against the Angels.
