It was only a matter of time before the Blue Jays made a move for a hot hitting minor-league infielder!
Yes, that’s right, Giovanny Urshela was traded from the Cleveland Indians to the Blue Jays in exchange for cash or a player to be named later. Imagine selling a human being, smh.
Urshela, who has pretty much just played at third base throughout his MLB career, is hitting .324/.405/.432 through his first 11 games at Triple-A Columbus to start the year. He’s also been all over the infield, starting games at each of the positions except for catcher. For his major league career, he has a line of .225/.273/.314 over parts of two seasons.
What does this trade mean? Not much, to be honest. I’m guessing they just don’t want to watch Richard Urena, a batless defense-first infielder take many at bats. I mean, he’s 5-35 combined between Dunedin and Buffalo this year. This is just them finding somebody to come off the bench and play defense, while also giving Solarte and Gurriel Jr. an occasional night off until Diaz gets back. He’ll join the team once he gets his work visa situation handled.
So whatever, depth! Or freak out over the Cleveland Boys™ getting one of their own!
