The Toronto Blue Jays will send out a reliable road starter, Tanner Roark, as they begin the last stop of what has been a seemingly endless road trip against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park on Friday night.
The Blue Jays are just 5-15 in their last 20 away games against the Red Sox, with the total going OVER for bettors 12 times on the MLB odds at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com in that span. However, the Red Sox are in a down cycle that is reflected by an 8-12 record in their last 20 home games at Fenway Park.
Pitchers have generally been ahead of hitters early in the pandemic-delayed MLB regular season. The Blue Jays have had the total go UNDER in six of their 10 games, and the UNDER has also hit at betting sites in eight of the Red Sox’s 12 games. The young Blue Jays lineup built around Bo Bichette, Cavan Biggio and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. ranks 28th of 30  teams in on-base percentage (.273) and 23rd in slugging percentage (.369). The Red Sox hitters are 17th (.310) and eighth (.423) respectively.
The Blue Jays will start righthander Roark (1-0, 1.80 ERA, 9.0 strikeouts per nine innings pitched) opposite Boston righty Ryan Weber (0-0, 11.57, 0.0 SO/9) in Friday’s series opener. Roark, a veteran newcomer to the Blue Jays, has had nine days between starts due to a postponed series, which could affect his command. But Roark’s teams have won in 13 of his last 20 away starts with the total going UNDER in eight of the last 12. Weber failed to finish the fourth inning in each of his first two starts.
Righthanders Matt Shoemaker (0-1, 5.91, 5.06 SO/9) and Zack Godley (0-1, 6.14, 9.82 SO/9) are listed as the Blue Jays’ and Red Sox’s scheduled Saturday starters. Shoemaker will be trying for a bounce-back start after a rough outing against the Atlanta Braves on Tuesday that marked the eighth time in his last 11 starts on the road that the total finished OVER. Godley, an ex-Blue Jay, also had a poor outcome in his last outing, which was his first start for Boston.
Neither team has named a starting pitcher for Sunday’s series finale. The Blue Jays’ flexibility relates to needing to replace righthander Trent Thornton (elbow inflammation), who has been placed on the 10-day injured list.
The Blue Jays have a travel day Monday before finally setting up next week at their temporary home, Sahlen Field in Buffalo, for a two-game series against the Miami Marlins and a three-game set against the Tampa Bay Rays.
