The head-to-head and moneyline histories seem to be stacked against the Toronto Blue Jays in a road series against the New York Yankees that also carries some notable UNDER trends. The Blue Jays are a +140 away underdog while the Yankees are a -155 favourite at home with a 9.5-run total on the MLB odds for Tuesday at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com.
Toronto is 5-14 in its last 19 games against New York as an away underdog, with the total finishing UNDER at betting sites in the six of the last eight matchups at Yankee Stadium. The Blue Jays are also 5-12 in their last 17 away games as a +130 to +160 underdog, with the total finishing UNDER 11 times. The Yankees are 10-2 in their last 12 games as a -150 to -180 favourite at home, with the total finishing UNDER eight times.
Toronto (26-21) is a half-game ahead of New York (26-20) for second in the AL East and the No. 5 seed in the league playoffs. Toronto has reintegrated Bo Bichette and his .970 OPS (on-base plus slugging) into its lineup, while Yankees power hitters Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton are each nearing a return from injuries. The Blue Jays are scoring 4.2 runs per game on the road and their .723 away OPS is 18th-best among 30 MLB teams. The pitching staff’s 3.88 road earned-run average ranks sixth-best. The Yankees are scoring 5.4 runs per home game through a fifth-best .830 OPS. Their 3.35 home ERA also ranks fifth.
Toronto’s Taijuan Walker (3-2, 2.95 ERA, 7.6 strikeouts per nine innings) and New York rookie Deivi Garcia (1-1, 3.06 ERA, 9.2 SO/9), both righthanders, will start in Tuesday’s matchup. Walker’s previous teams were 3-5 in his last eight starts as an away underdog. The total has finished at 9.0 runs or fewer in all three of Garcia’s starts, with the most recent outing being a strong seven-inning effort against Toronto on September 9.
Tanner Roark (2-1, 5.60 ERA, 7.9 SO/9) starts opposite fellow righthander Gerrit Cole (5-3, 3.20 ERA, 12.1 SO/9) in Wednesday’s matchup. The Blue Jays are 6-2 in Roark’s last eight starts, and the OVER has hit in three of his last four. The Yankees’ are 1-4 in Cole’s last five starts with the UNDER hitting four times.
Righthanders Chase Anderson (0-1, 5.81 ERA, 8.5 SO/9) and Masahiro Tanaka (2-2, 3.16 ERA, 8.3 SO/9) are projected to start in Thursday’s matchup. The Blue Jays are 1-5 in their last six games started by Anderson, who has never faced the Yankees. The Yankees are 9-2 when Tanaka starts at home against the Blue Jays, and the total has gone UNDER in eight of those 11 matchups.
The next road series for the Blue Jays is a four-game, three-day set against the Philadelphia Phillies which includes a doubleheader on Friday.
