There goes the two-game winning streak.

The Blue Jays were one out away from winning their series opener against the San Francisco Giants but the home team was able to mount a rally in the ninth inning.

Yusei Kikuchi got the start for the Blue Jays and put together arguably his strongest performance of the season. The lefty allowed two runs over seven-and-one-third innings and struck out a season-high 13 batters. The only damage that Kikuchi allowed came in the form of two solo home runs, one by Heliot Ramos in the fourth inning and one by Tyler Fitzgerald in the eighth.

All of Toronto’s runs came on one swing of the bat from Ernie Clement. With the Giants up by a score of 1-0 in the seventh inning, Danny Jansen drew a walk off of San Francisco reliever Ryan Walker, Spencer Horwitz hit a double, and Clement drove them both in with a three-run home run.

Kikuchi was pulled from the game with one out in the eighth inning and a 3-2 lead. Nate Pearson worked around a double to Thairo Estrada and a walk to Michael Conforto to get through the eighth and then Trevor Richards came in for the save in the ninth. He managed to get two outs but couldn’t close the door as the Giants came back to win on a wild pitch.

This game marked the first meeting between the Blue Jays and Matt Chapman, who signed with the Giants as a free agent last winter following two seasons in Toronto. The Gold Glove third baseman went 0-for-4 in the series opener and struck out three times, twice by Kikuchi and once by Pearson.

The Blue Jays and Giants will play the second game of this three-game series on Wednesday evening. Chris Bassitt will take the mound for Toronto and San Francisco will counter with Logan Webb.
