The Toronto Blue Jays have had the edge against the Baltimore Orioles when they meet near the finish line of the regular season. The teams close out the regular season starting Friday.
The Blue Jays are 14-6 in their last 20 home games against the Orioles, with the total finishing UNDER 11 times on the MLB odds at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com. The Blue Jays are also 9-3 against the Orioles in their last 12 matchups in September, with the OVER hitting at sports betting sites in five of the last six games from that sample.
Toronto clinched an American League playoff spot on Thursday. The Tampa Bay Rays are the Blue Jays’ most likely playoff opponent in the best-of-three wild card series, although there is a mathematical possibility of Toronto overtaking the New York Yankees for second place in the AL East and a higher seeding.
Entering this weekend, the Blue Jays are averaging 6.1 runs per game at home and their .829 home OPS is sixth-best among the 30 MLB teams. The pitching staff’s 4.39 ERA at home ranks 18th. The Orioles’ are averaging 5.0 runs per game away from home and rank sixth in road OPS (.771). Their 4.39 road ERA ranks 14th.
Starting pitcher matchups for the series have not been confirmed at MLB.com.
Based on the teams’ previous pitcher usage, the Blue Jays’ Taijuan Walker (4-3, 2.86 ERA, 8.2 strikeouts per nine innings) and Orioles’ Jorge Lopez (2-1, 5.11 ERA, 6.7 SO/9) are in line to start in Friday’s matchup. Walker’s teams are 6-1 in his last seven starts at home with the total going UNDER five times. Lopez’s teams are 3-11 in his last 14 starts on the road, and the total has gone OVER in four of his last five away starts.
Blue Jays righthander Matt Shoemaker (0-1, 4.71 ERA, 8.2 SO/9) and Orioles lefthander John Means (2-3, 5.02 ERA, 7.9 SO/9) are in line to start on Saturday. Shoemaker has helped his teams go 9-2 in his last 11 starts at home. The Orioles are 4-10 in Means’ last 14 starts on the road, but he has a 3.00 ERA in two career starts against Toronto.
Righthander Tanner Roark (2-3, 7.01 ERA, 8.0 SO/9) and rookie lefthander Keegan Akin (1-2, 3.57 ERA, 12.3 SO/9), who both pitched on Tuesday, could start Sunday. Roark’s teams are 2-4 in his last six starts at home, with the total going OVER five times. Roark also has a 6.00 ERA in 27 career innings against Baltimore. The Orioles are 3-1 in Akin’s last four starts with the total finishing UNDER three times.
