A slew of injuries to the Toronto Blue Jays in 2026 led several farm-system players to make their MLB debuts. While these debuts had mixed results, they did give Blue Jays fans a peek into what’s in store for the future. Let’s take a look at up-and-comers who made their MLB debuts in 2026 for the Blue Jays.
Brett Bateman
Brett Bateman may not be considered an up-and-comer at this point. He made his MLB debut on August 7 against the Philadelphia Phillies, just days after he was traded by the Chicago Cubs in exchange for Kevin Gausman.
Bateman became one of the better stories on the Blue Jays in 2026. He slashed .329/.402/.424 with 52 hits and 11 RBIs, while becoming the everyday leadoff hitter for the Blue Jays. On top of his impressive offensive production, Bateman also showed strong defence, acting as a replacement for Daulton Varsho in centre field. His impressive play on both sides made him a spark plug for the Blue Jays during the final stretch of the season.
It remains to be seen how the Blue Jays use Bateman in 2027, but he made a fantastic first impression and is certainly a player to watch for the Blue Jays going forward.
Ricky Tiedemann
It was a long time coming, but Ricky Tiedemann finally made his MLB debut in 2026. The Blue Jays drafted Tiedemann in the third round of the 2021 draft. At one point, he was the top-ranked prospect in the Blue Jays’ system.
However, injuries have derailed his progress. He missed the entire 2025 season while recovering from Tommy John surgery. He also missed a month in 2026 with shoulder and neck irritation. Once he recovered, Tiedemann moved into a one-inning relief role.
Finally healthy, Tiedemann made his long-awaited MLB debut on August 15 against the New York Yankees. He pitched 1.2 innings, giving up one run on two hits. Tiedemann made four more appearances with the Blue Jays in 2026, all of which were scoreless. In total, he posted a 1.50 ERA in six innings of work.
Tiedemann finally making his debut with the Blue Jays was one of the feel-good stories from 2026. There is still concern about his injury history, and the Blue Jays seemed to monitor his workload closely. Still, he showed his potential during his time in MLB. If he can stay healthy and continue showing his potential, it will have been worth the wait.
Sean Keys
Sean Keys was given a chance in MLB after his impressive performance in the minors. From April 3 to June 25, he slashed .284/.409/.619 with 21 home runs between Double-A and Triple-A. The Blue Jays struggled for offence throughout 2026, and Keys showed he had the power the team desperately needed.
Keys’ first stint with the Blue Jays was unimpressive. He slashed .167/.189/.278 with one home run in 37 plate appearances. Not only did the offence not translate to MLB, but it was also difficult for Keys to get playing time. He’s a corner infielder, so he’s blocked at first base by Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and at third by Kazuma Okamoto. He was sent down to Triple-A on July 23.
Keys continued to impress with the Buffalo Bisons. At the end of August, the Bisons experimented with him in left field, which would give the Blue Jays more options to give him playing time. Keys was called back up to the Blue Jays when the rosters expanded on September 1.
He performed better during his second stint, slashing .240/.310/.400 with one home run and four RBIs in 29 plate appearances. He only played two innings in left field.
Keys’ performance in the minors made him a good candidate for getting called up to the Blue Jays. So far, his potential hasn’t really shone through in MLB. He’s been hampered by limited playing time during his time with the Blue Jays. That’s unlikely to change, but if they can find a way to get his bat in the lineup, the potential is there.
Charles McAdoo
Like Keys, Charles McAdoo was called up to the Blue Jays due to his impressive form in the minors. However, his first stint in MLB left much to be desired. He slashed .160/.160/.280 in 25 plate appearances. He did make a good first impression, hitting a home run in his first game, but otherwise struggled.
Also like Keys, McAdoo did not get much playing time during his first stint with the Blue Jays, which likely made the transition much more difficult. He was sent back to Triple-A on June 20.
McAdoo, once again, performed well with the Bisons. He was named the International League’s Player of the Week on August 9. The following day, he was called back up to the Blue Jays.
McAdoo looked much better during his second stint with the Blue Jays. He slashed .292/.346/.431 with 11 RBIs in 81 plate appearances. He also hit two home runs, including the final home run of the season for the Blue Jays. Overall, McAdoo looked a lot more MLB-ready in his second stint.
Playing time is still a concern for McAdoo, though he has more flexibility than Keys. He played first, second, third, and left field in 2026. He may not be quite an everyday player yet, but maybe one day. Until then, he’s a useful utility player off the bench.
Yohendrick Piñango
Yohendrick Piñango spent much of 2026 bouncing between the Blue Jays and the Bisons. During his time with the Blue Jays, he impressed offensively. Piñango slashed .260/.306/.396 with five home runs and 20 RBIs in 180 plate appearances.
Piñango showed a lot of offensive upside. However, he showed poor defence. His -5 FRV was the second worst on the team, only ahead of Jesus Sanchez (-9). Unless he improves his defence massively, Piñango is probably best suited as a designated hitter. On top of that, he is one of many left-handed hitting outfielders on the Blue Jays. Those two things make it difficult to see how Piñango fits into the Blue Jays roster long-term, despite his impressive showing in 2026.
Piñango is set to play for Cardenales de Lara in the Venezuelan Winter League as he looks to put together a strong offseason heading into the 2027 campaign.
Brendan Cellucci
Brendan Cellucci was a bit of a surprise at the end of the season for the Blue Jays. He was drafted in 2019 by the Boston Red Sox, but released in July 2025. After dropping out of professional baseball, he played in Puerto Rico during the winter before signing a minor league contract with the Blue Jays.
Cellucci was first called up to the Blue Jays on August 19 but sent back to Triple-A two days later without making an appearance. He was recalled to the Blue Jays on September 14. The following day, he made his MLB debut, striking out three in 1.2 innings in a 10-1 loss against the Detroit Tigers.
Cellucci pitched 8.2 innings across six appearances with the Blue Jays to end the season. He did not give up a hit until his fourth appearance against the Baltimore Orioles and never gave up a run.
Cellucci was an unexpected but nice story to end the Blue Jays season. At 28 years old, it’s unclear how he fits into the Blue Jays’ future, but he could certainly come in handy if the Blue Jays are in need of bullpen arms.
