The Toronto Blue Jays have got their shortstop back.
According to the team, the Blue Jays have activated Bo Bichette off the 10-day Injured List, optioning Steward Berroa to Triple-A Buffalo.
Bichette was one of the Blue Jays’ best players in 2023, slashing .306/.339/.475 with 20 homers in 601 plate appearances for a 125 wRC+ and a 4 fWAR. However, his 2024 season has been rough, simply put.
This season, he’s slashing .237/.286/.342 with four homers in 276 plate appearances, along with an 80 wRC+ and a 0.4 fWAR. Now, this isn’t the first time he’s had a slow start, as he slashed .256/.295/.420 with 17 homers in his first 511 plate appearances in 2022. However, from August 21 until the end of the season, Bichette slashed .386/.435/.608 with seven homers to help lead the Jays to a postseason appearance.
Bichette is supposed to be one of the two faces of the Blue Jays franchise, yet he’s been a below-average player throughout the season. Hopefully, he can catch fire like he did in 2022, because this team desperately needs to get going, or they’ll end up selling at the deadline.
As for Berroa, he didn’t register an official plate appearance during his short stint with the Blue Jays. In Monday’s game, he was caught stealing while also playing a game in centre field on Sunday.
Still, he’s a player worth monitoring for the rest of the season. With the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons, Berroa is salshing .295/.380/.451 with seven home runs in 222 plate appearances, matching his career-best in 93-less plate appearances. On top of that, he has a good eye at the plate (11.7 BB%) and has the most stolen bases in the organization with 29 in 37 attempts.
If the Jays do end up going the selling route, Kevin Kiermaier may be a player moved (with cash heading to the team trading for him), and Berroa is a pretty obvious replacement in the fourth outfield role.
